Wolfsburg had never won a top German title before the 2008-09 season.

They lost in the 1995 German Cup final to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

In the 2008-09 campaign, Wolfsburg equalled the longest winning streak in one Bundesliga season with 10 successive victories after the winter break.

They were promoted to the top flight in 1997 and have never been relegated since. They had never finished higher than fifth before the 2008/09 season.

Wolfsburg are the only team in the Bundesliga to have had two strikers score more than 20 goals each in one season. Brazilian Grafite and Bosnian Edin Dzeko did it in the title-winning season, scoring 28 and 26 respectively.

The team was initially founded for the workers in the nearby Volkswagen factory and is owned by the car manufacturer.
