Bundesliga - Wolfsburg romp to title in style

Eurosport - Sat, 23 May 22:28:00 2009

Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga in style after a 5-1 win over Werder Bremen confirmed them as champions ahead of Bayern Munich.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Bundesliga Vfl Wolfsburg's Christian Gentner lifts up his Brazilian team mate Grafite as they celebrate their second goal against Werder Bremen in a 5-1 win that handed Wolfsburg the title. - 0

A brace from Grafite, strikes from Zvjezdan Misimovic and Edin Dzeko plus a Sebastian Proedl own-goal gave outgoing Wolves boss Felix Magath the perfect leaving gift.

Wolfsburg started and finished the day two points clear of Bayern, who won at home to Stuttgart.

The Volkswagen-owned side also became the first in the history of the Bundesliga to have two strikers score over 20 goals apiece in one season.

Brazilian Grafite scored his 27th and 28th in the win while Bosnia international Dzeko hit goal number 26.

Misimovic opened the scoring on five minutes when he hammered a shot in off the bar.

They doubled their lead when Grafite finished low across Tim Wiese 10 minutes later, and it was 3-0 within the same time-frame after defender Proedl diverted the Brazilian's cross into his own net.

An excellent finish by Diego after a one-two with Claudio Pizarro reduced arrears, but a far-post header from Grafite and a sliding finish by Dzeko added a gloss to the title celebrations.

The result ensured that there would be no last-gasp title win for Bayern, who beat Stuttgart 2-1 thanks to a first-half own-goal by Khalid Bouhlarouz and a second-half strike by Mark Van Bommel.

Mario Gomez was on target for Stuttgart, who qualified for the Champions League despite the defeat.

A last-minute winner by Piotr Trochowski gave Hamburg a dramatic route into the Europa League with a 3-2 victory at Frankfurt.

David Jarolim and Ivica Olic had put Martin Jol's side 2-0 up but two goals in four minutes by Alexander Meier and Brazilian Caio seemed to have ended the visitors' hope of European football.

However, Trochowski struck in injury-time to put them two points ahead of Dortmund, who started the day in fifth place ahead on goal difference but drew 1-1 at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Gladbach's point meant they avoided the slim possibility of slipping into the play-offs.

In the other key Bundesliga clashes, Cottbus hammered Leverkusen 3-0 to give them a play-off chance to avoid relegation.

They will play the third-placed second-tier side for a place in the top flight. With one game to play Mainz currently lie second in 2.Bundesliga, three points ahead of Nuremberg.

Karlsruhe subsequently dropped to the second division despite a shock 4-0 win at home Berlin, which in turn denied the visitors a Champions League spot.

Bielefeld were also relegated after drawing 2-2 at home to Hanover.

The day's dead rubbers saw Cologne draw 1-1 at home to Bochum, while Hoffenheim came from behind to win 3-2 at Schalke, ensuring the former league leaders seventh place in their debut top-flight season.
