Premier League - Poll: Newcastle to beat drop

Eurosport - Sat, 23 May 16:09:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! readers think that Newcastle United will defy the odds and avoid relegation to the Championship.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Newcastle United Newcastle-Middlesbrough Obafemi Martins after scoring in 3-1 relegation battle over local rivals Middlesbrough - 0

After Newcastle lost 1-0 at home to Fulham last week and Hull drew at Bolton, the Tigers jumped out of the relegation zone.

And, despite Toon facing a difficult away match at Aston Villa on the last day of the season, you believe they will pull off a great escape and better Hull's result at home to Manchester United's third team.

It is close though: half of you think the Magpies will do it, compared to 42 per cent who reckon Hull will win or - more likely - Newcastle lose.

This could as much reflect the influence of optimistic Newcastle fans, who are far greater in number than those who support Hull.

What is strange, though, is that most of the comments readers have sent in have been forthright in saying Newcastle will go down. Perhaps the more discerning reader sees Hull as having the better chance?

Hardly any of you, however, think Boro can 'do a West Brom' and complete a remarkable comeback, and unsurprising too: they would need to win at West Ham by a few goals and hope Newcastle and Hull both lose by a fair margin.

Poll results: Who will stay in the Premier League?

(22,622 votes since Monday May 18)

Newcastle United - 50 per cent (11,362 votes)

Hull City - 42 per cent (9,584 votes)

Middlesbrough - 7 per cent (1,676 votes)

Reddevil155: Still can't believe clubs like Newcastle and Boro are probably gonna go down... Big Sam wouldn't have let this happen to the Toon and I think Gareth Southgate is a nothing manager. Easy said in hindsight but these are two big blunders on the part of their respective clubs. I'd rather see Hull go down to be honest... Man Utd fan.

Tonyandcazza: What's the difference between Newcastle and Alan Shearer? Alan Shearer WILL be on Match Of The Day next season!

Paul T: Newcastle wouldn't be in this problem if they left management and staff as it was but instead Mike Ashley changed everything. I hope they get relegated so they can sort the players that aren't giving 110 per cent to the club and sell them and buy new players.

Lee: The Toon are going down I'm afraid... I'm sure Newcastle will bounce back up next season with some silverware and be much better for it... chin up Geordies.

Ron G: Goodbye Newcastle. Still, you should manage to win a few more games next season.

Pringle Russell: I think the Toon will see off Villa 3-1 and stay up.

Steven W: I'm a Middlesbrough fan and I don't care if they go down because I'm going on holiday to Cyprus - bye bye!

Harbaljit: Come on Newcastle let's win and get out of the relegation zone so come on make it a win! I bet you if you win then we still have a chance to show off our skills and to get in the Champions League, so come on Newcastle!

  3. Even if they stay up, do you honestly think any one will buy a Mike Ashley owned relic?
He wants too much for a club that lives in the past!
The last time they won anything was 40 years ago, and they still say they are a great cclub. Honestly. Give it back to the scrap man. He had the right idea about Newcastle's women, the club and his role in it. Stay up. No chance. Aston Villa on a bad day are a million times better than the current Newcastle team. Has beens and no hopers still earing a fortune because of agents who talked rings around Dennis not so Wise. Sell the players and bring in the local amateurs. Whitley Bay, Blyth and Blue Star. They got the passion that Shearer the Saviour needs. If Newcastle need a road map to Doncaster and the south, I've got a spare one Mike Ashley can buy! Farewell Newcastle......Going Toon the Leagues.
