Allardyce rules out major overhaul

Sat 23 May, 03:24 PM

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce has ruled out a sweeping overhaul of his squad next season.

Instead he is looking to add about "four or five players" to the group in the hope of improving the team's prospects.

Tugay, Andre Ooijer and Carlos Villanueva are all departing at the end of the campaign and one or two others are likely to follow.

Allardyce is looking forward to wheeling and dealing in the transfer market in the summer.

He said: "While we are all affected by the worldwide financial crisis, we are protected somewhat by the fact that we are in the Premier League. It will be a busy summer as we are going through a transitional period with players coming and going.

"Perhaps four or five players would be sufficient provided they are of the right quality. It is about getting a bigger and better squad for next season. It is nice to start planning, knowing where we are going to be now our safety has been secured."

  1. Four or five players Sam? Come on, you need a few more than that. Tugay, Andre Ooijer and Carlos Villanueva are mentioned above, there's no recognised right back (Emerton/Andrews!), Santa Cruz is for the off, Benni and Aaron Mokoena have both been quoted in the press about leaving, Khizanishvili must be due to retire by now, there are doubts over the ability for Reid and Dunn to keep clear of injury and Matt could be headed for a longer holiday in Greece. I just don't see strength in depth pushing the first team for places. You can only play people out of position for so long.
