Ferguson explains selection

Sat 23 May, 11:56 AM

Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced Hull's relegation rivals would have even more reason to worry for their futures if he named his strongest side at the KC Stadium on Sunday.

With the Champions League final against Barcelona looming on Wednesday, Ferguson will leave all his senior stars out of the title winners' last league game, with the exception of Darren Fletcher, who is suspended, and the likes of Wes Brown, who will not be considered for Rome anyway.

Ferguson said: "The rest of the league may think it was good because United would be playing their strongest team but it is the worst thing that could happen to us."

The situation has led to suggestions Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland may combine to launch legal action against the Old Trafford club, although the clubs themselves have rejected such a notion.

However, Ferguson cannot see how anyone would want Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and the rest doing battle on their behalf so close to one of the biggest matches of their lives.

Ferguson added: "If you have a European final on the Wednesday and you get one of these 50-50 tackles in the first minute when the crowd is roaring, you just end up saying that is enough for me.

Instead, Federico Macheda, who could get a title medal given his match-winning contributions against Aston Villa and Sunderland, and Daniel Welbeck are set to lead the United attack, with Darron Gibson in midfield, just as they were in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley last month.

"I can assure everyone not to worry about my team," said Ferguson, who toyed with the idea of phoning Ricky Sbragia, Alan Shearer and Gareth Southgate to offer further reassurance about his likely line-up.

"If I can trust these lads in a semi-final, why can't I trust them in the last game of the season when we have already won the league?"

  2. good on you fergy. if he wants to field a weakened team thats his choice, he has earned it after all. i still think playing villa, no disrespect to them, at the moment would be easier than playing a man u B' team simply down to the form and confidence of the two teams

  5. its not man utds fault newcastle, sunderland and boro are in that situation, its down to them not performing all season i fell a little sorry for newcastle if shearer had the balls to takeover earlier in the season they wouldn't be where they are now so if any one is to blame its there 'gordie god'. as for sunderland and boro they there because they just aren't good enough to cut it in the PL. man utd will rest players but who blames fergie if it was any of the three north east teams in that situation im sure they would do excactly the same. But dont worry newcastle fans man utds 3rd school team would still beat hul. lMy predictions are Man utd to tonk barca 3-1 and newcastle to scrape survival by the skin of the teeth.

here they are the utd thick heads, if this was reversed you'd all be bleating from the shires. Total disrespect for other clubs. It's so predictable to see you juveniles jump to ferguson's defence . If Barca will on Wednesday you'll all on here saying how unfair it was, your club has no class.

  11. Charlie, if you must comment at least make it sound intelligent, that comment from you is embarrassing. On a personal level going unbeaten at home is great, but it makes it all the more frustrating that we failed to be champions again this year. Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal all had slip-ups and we failed to take advantage because we were simply not good enough over the whole season. Next year we will not be so lucky and with Everton looking to break into the top four we may even finish 5th.

  12. A manager chooses the team he wants from the players he has available. This is his job. 'Cheating' is not an acceptable word in these circumstances. IF Man Utd don't beat Hull (and they probably will, even fielding a second team) the unfortunate losers will just have to reflect on the fact that over 38 games they were unable to average even 1 point per game. There are in fact 5 or 6 teams who are not worthy of being in the Premier League, and some of them should thank their lucky stars that no more than 3 can be relegated.

  14. If boro and newcastle lose they go down no matter what happens at Hull, its the 'lets hate and blame man u bandwagon' rolling in to town, Its not our problem their relying on other results to survive, they have not been good enough for 37 games, all of a sudden its Man Uniteds problem if they go, bad managers, bad decisions, bad signings.

  15. I wonder if the above thoughts are from a Liverpool fan?
Didn't Liverpool play a weakened team v Fulham before Champions League Final?
3 teams at the bottom of the league are there for a reason.
The league is across a whole season.
Utd will beat Hull and then you will all shut the *!!! up ;-)

typical ferguson the cheating git. It this was against his club he'd be screaming like a kid. Old purple nose has no respect for any other club, manager or their supporters. He has been give cart Blanche to treat the PL as he wishes he brings shame and dishonour to football year after year. Get rid of this bleating moaning knobhead.
