Bolton manager Gary Megson believes they need to address their lack of numbers in the squad or pay the consequences.
Megson has been working with arguably the smallest pool of players in the Barclays Premier League, yet they have managed to remain in the top flight for the second successive season under his stewardship.
It is a considerable achievement but Megson is now keen to make serious investment during the summer in all areas apart from the goalkeeping position.
Megson said: "Money is tight everywhere but we have got to kick on If we do not then we are going to have real problems next season.
"We have made a profit in transfer business in the last two years and the wage bill is down as well.
"We are pleased but that was not my brief. If you do not keep going forward you get problems."

Megson may have the smallest squad in the premiership but his team have also played the fewest number of games,so I believe.I'm not a great admirer of his tactics but credit where it is due,he has done a reasonable job with the tools at his command.I think it inevitable that Cahill will leave before next season and that needs to be addressed/I also cannot understand his decision not to use Smolarek (a proven international golascorer) rather than Elamander who spent much of the season sidelined with injuries. The main praise must go to Jussi Jaaskelainen,Matt Taylor and the indefatigable Kevin Davies for keeping Bolton going this season. Both Mark Davies and Fabrice Muamba are still young and improving and will get better. Both Eddie Davis and Phil Gartside need to invest in players proven at premiership level or Bolton will face a similar season of floundering in the lower reaches.
