Rudd in England call

Sat 23 May, 02:29 PM

Rookie Norwich goalkeeper Declan Rudd has been called into the England Under-19 squad ahead of next week's European Championship qualifiers.

The 18-year-old has replaced Huddersfield's Alex Smithies for what will be his first call-up for the Under-19 national side, having previously featured at both Under-16 and Under-17 levels.

Brian Eastick's team face opposition from Bosnia, Slovakia and Scotland in Elite Round Qualifiers to secure a place in the finals of the European Championship in Ukraine in July.

The first of these is against Bosnia-Herzegovina at Doncaster Rover's Keepmoat Stadium on May 27, followed by the games against Slovakia at Valley Parade, Bradford on May 29 and Scotland at Bramall Lane, Sheffield on June 1.

Rudd is one of five changes made to the squad ahead of next week due to injuries or club commitments.

  3. Rudd is one to watch for the future for England...He needs to be given more chances like this as do many English keepers. We can not rely on Premier teams to employ English born keepers to help the national side.
