Wenger coy on transfer plans

Sat 23 May, 10:10 AM

Arsene Wenger is determined to find the right men at the right price to strengthen his Arsenal squad this summer, but is not about to give away just how much cash he has to spend.

The Gunners boss has already allayed fears he was set to quit Emirates Stadium for Real Madrid following criticism by some supporters in the wake of a fourth campaign without silverware, and is now in the market for some experience to add to the potential of his young squad.

"If I tell you I have £250million, every player I call will cost three times more," he said.

"When I am manager of a club I do with what I have available and you have never heard me complain about the money that was available.

"But as well I do not accept people to think that I am stupid enough to have £100million at my disposal and put it in the bank because I am scared to spend it."

  1. It has been another disappointing and frustrating for us, Arsenal fans.

I hope we can improve next season, we shouldn't be intimidated of Manchester Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool and we can beat both of them.

Wenger should stay put, because he has led us to three league titles and four F.A. cups and to the league cup and the Champions League finals despite we didn't win any of them, but I know we can do it next season.

  2. Comment 23 i agree with everything you have said but i think u will find Bergkamp and Wright were already at Arsenal before Wenger took over. The genius that bought Bergy to the club was Bruce Rioch (remember him)?

  3. I`ve been watching my reds since 1947. I`ve seen the highs and the lows. It didn`t come much lower than the Swindon debacle. Over all these last few Wenger years they have been a joy to watch. So what we haven`t got much silverware lately just remember the days of magic and the sheer joy and exuberance of their football. There are no finer sights than the Arsenal in full flow.
As for next year, unless we get a defensive unit that truly understands the way to defend against the British, as opposed to European, attack I still see us struggling. The sheer pace, power and aggression of the British game is one that needs answering in the same manner. The non British players appear not have that "bred in the bone" resilience and determination that is so necessary in the British game.
Great defenders are born, rarely, if ever, made. While great defenders can be bought what appears to be overlooked is that these players are great in their own leagues and they have to adjust to the Premiership. They do pretty well against teams whose attack has a foreign influence but they seem to wilt under the nonstop power and aggression of the English game. Remember when teams believed that to beat Arsenal all you had to do was kick them off the park. There is still a legacy leftover from those days.

Ravanelli, I believe, said it best when on his return to Italy he was asked "What is the difference playing in England?" He is purported to have said..."The English are crazy. If they are losing 3 nil with four minutes to go they still believe they can win."
It is that attitude that foreign defenders seem to struggle with and it is that reason that I suggest that a more home grown central defence is more beneficial, over the season.
Pretty, fancy defending may suit for the European adventures but when it comes down to a bitterly cold and rainy day in Feb I demand that my team get their heads down and get as tough, mean and ugly as their opposition.

  5. Lol, i forgot about silvestre well pointed out, and i agree another established centreback is crucial.

But besides silvestre and ade no-one needs to leave (not even bentder lol)as ive been hearing on here particularly about song and denilson who as you said dont get the credit they deserve, when flamini first got a long run of games(when gilberto was injured) he made mistakes and showed his age, but the next season he took gilberto spot and was much impoved, as will denilson and song after dealing with fab's injury for that chunk of the season with not much prior 1st exp.

BUT i dont call people glory hunters because of criticism. thats one thing and everyone does it but leaving stadiums half empty and booing our own players is a disgrace, dont care wht anyone says, u dont do that if as a SUPPORTER of a club.

and saying wenger should be booted and half the team should be gutted as ive read on here 2many times is fucuk!n dumb aswell, i dont understand how people dont realsie tht if we keep this team together, with 1/2 additions for depth we can beat anyone and dominate. were really not that far off as some fans make out.

  6. OK I'M GONNA HAVE A RANT NOW!!!

It really p*sses me off when (so called) Arsenal fans moan about Arsene Wenger not being a great manager. He is one of (if not) the best managers we have seen at Arsenal.

This is the man that that brought in the some of the most well known names you hear today, names that before they played at the Arsenal you would would of said "who the hells that?"

    A couple for your memory

Patrick Viera - Dennis Berkhamp - Thierry Henry - Ian Wright - Nikolas Anelka - Robert Pires - Robin Van Persie - Cesc Fabregas - Theo Walcatt - Sammi Nasri............I won't go on.

This is also the manager that got through a whole season UNDEFEATED

This is the manager that rather than look for the talented stars that come with hefty price tags, spots them before hand and builds them to great players that end up giving us the millions we have in our bank account!

This is the manager that would rather than buy these expensive players, work and nurture the talent rising through the academy, youth and reserve teams.

Okay we have had a dry spell of for 4 years but look at Chelsea, Liverpool and even Man Utd. They've all gone through dry spells. But to be in the top 4 with an average aged team of 23 isn't bad really it it??!!!!!

But I do agree we do miss a Viera style player, somebody in the centre that is a playmaker like we had when we were the untouchables.

So if you're an Arsenal supporter, supporting Arsenal means sticking with them through the good and bad. I'm proud of arsenal and have been for 26 years.

Next season will be good especially as our young boys are developing and yes it does appear we will be looking to strenghthen the back line again.

I think Arshavin or Nasri could be the playmakers in mid that we need. Lets hope so

  7. to fsekou1009.. wenger did not sell flamini. its flamini doesnt want to sign new contract with arsenal, he signed for milan. wenger doesnt want to sell hleb, he alway praise hleb as his main player. its hleb who doesnt want to stay at arsenal anymore. if flamini and hleb stays, arsenal will win one of the trophies. i'm sure of it. so leave wenger alone!!!

  9. Some fans think of others as "glory hunters" because they are critical of wenger(even the best make mistakes), Alex Ferguson went through a dry spell of trophy-less seasons which he rectified. U don't think AW was wrong to sell flamini, hleb abd gilberto in one go, U don't think he was wrong to take the captain's armband from gilberto and give it to gallas who just arrived from a rival club . That just showed he didn't have any leadership until gallas arrived, that's not what u want to tell ure players. Players like Tony adams EARNED the armband!! Fabregas doesn't shout much but he is our most influential player and he has earned it. Imagine any player at any other club walking into the team and made captain from the first game, well that happened to beckham at LA galaxy but it's understandable. Gilberto was brilliant, true professional and was sold, not for poor performances, not for lack of discipline, not for lack of determination but for being OLD, and to give opportunities to youngsters.Well Old bergkamp did it very well until he retired, he was used as a squad player when he became older but was still terrifying defenders when he came on. I understand Mr Wenger trying to build for the future and he is the best man for the job no doubt about it but as everyone could tell we had a hole in the centre of midfield, who replaced him? diaby?denilson? song? none of them could stop anelka from running straight at the defence down the middle and score. Although song's had a good season, denilson is better than people give him credit for. They've got a lot of experience already for their age. Strikah says we don't need to get rid of anyone, mmmm not even sylvestre? I thought wenger pulled off another "cheap" amazing signing...WRONG!!! You have to admit recruiting center-backs is not one of Wenger's best qualities!! Bring in Adams to sort out the defence. 36 goals conceded in 37 games, worst defensive rec

  10. at times u can have a good plan and things can still go wrong. we're talking of football that even the most expensive and best player gets a serious injuries 2 keep em out so a lil bit of luck can help. mr wenger had a plan with youth that pocess lots of energy and great fitness. thats a strategy that dont always work depending serveral reasoning and the occasion. personally i do think we need the clever-experience type 4 the youngster 2 study from. how 2 get the msg 2 wenger is the probs however i can only pray as a good fan. senna from villarreal wil b good. perhap fabregas in 5yrs if still with arsenal wil b a great help

  12. Good to see some REAL fans actually supporting our manager and club and not GLORY HUNTERS moaning about trophies, wenger and players, no-one needs to leave except ade who is quality when he wants to be, but has no heart or dedication for the badge. Replace him with another established striker with the 20-24mil teams R rating him at.
