Potters poised to make it a double

Mon 23 Jun, 12:15 PM

Stoke are set to begin their summer spending this week with the captures of Tottenham's Anthony Gardner and Sunderland goalkeeper Marton Fulop. The Potters are yet to complete a signing since their promotion from the Championship last month but the transfer market is notoriously quiet until the end of June and Tony Pulis has instead concentrated on finalising a list of targets for the summer.

That is now complete, according to director of football John Rudge, and the Premier League new boys should now get their spending underway with the captures of former Port Vale defender Gardner for around £1.5million and Fulop for close to £2million.

Gardner has also been linked with West Brom and Hull but he favours a move to the Potters as his family, many of whom are City fans, still live in nearby Stafford.

Gardner's wage demands are also believed to be far in excess of what Hull are prepared to pay, but Stoke are quietly confident of agreeing personal terms with the 26-year-old before the end of the week.

Fulop, meanwhile, has been linked with PSV Eindhoven this summer but he has been assured of the number one jersey at the Britannia Stadium and is keen to make the switch and prove himself in the Premier League.

Roy Keane would prefer to keep hold of Fulop but the Black Cats boss has assured the Hungary international he will not stand in the way of a move away from the Stadium of Light as he cannot guarantee him first-team football.

Meanwhile Stoke are also close to finally completing a deal to bring Jamaica midfielder Rudolph Ausin to England. Red tape has twice held up their move for the 22-year-old, but starts in two internationals last week should allow Pulis to finally land a player he has been chasing for over a year.
