Premier League - Transfer Talk

Eurosport - Mon, 23 Jun 18:18:00 2008

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had a noteworthy companion as he sat down to watch the pulsating thriller that was Spain v Italy.

2007-2008 Arsenal Cesc Fabregas Arsene Wenger - 0

John Motson may not have deemed him worthy of a mention, no doubt because he was too busy commentating on the actions of Dani 'Geezer', but the fact that Wenger was sitting next to none other than Zinedine Zidane has set tongues wagging.

Zizou has stated he would like to get back into football (remember those QPR rumours?), so perhaps he'll be helping Wenger in his global search for the best young talent from around the globe. Wenger might even be lining up the former headbutting midfield genius as a potential long-term successor. Or, perhaps, they will use the latest in genetic splicing technology to merge and form a new breed of supercoach named Wengzou. Or, maybe, they're just good pals.

Wenger claims that he was merely there to see how his current boy-wonder Cesc Fabregas was getting on, but surely he can't have helped sneaking a glimpse of the man who has been keeping him out of La Seleccion, Villarreal's Marcos Senna.

Not only that, but with a defence that is only ever a stubbed toe away from featuring Philippe Senderos, perhaps Valencia's Carlos Marchena took his fancy. All idle speculation of course, but it's so much fun.

On the subject of Spain, Tottenham Hotspur are setting themselves up for some embarrassment by lining up a £20 million bid for David Villa.

With the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid hovering around the Valencia striker, Spurs look destined for a 'thanks, but no thanks' from the highly-coveted forward.

The north Londoners have not been afraid to splash the cash recently, and their cavalier attitude to solvency could extend to selling players too.

Everton want to take striker Darren Bent off their hands for £8 million - half of what they paid for him this time last year - while Portsmouth have been linked with a £2 million bid for Younes Kaboul. The Frenchman, who apparently lists his occupation as 'Defender', arrived last summer for £7.5 million.

In a painfully predictable move, Newcastle United are ready to take the dazzling but unproductive winger Aaron Lennon off of Tottenham's hands for £6 million.

There have been some developments in the transfer goings-on at Chelsea. Well, no there haven't, but the press are working tirelessly to make you think that something is happening.

Apparently Barcelona midfielder Deco will seal his £12 million move to Stamford Bridge by the end of the week, while long-term Manchester City target Ronaldinho has come out with some conveniently-timed platitudes for his former national team boss Phil Scolari, saying: "I'm very happy for Scolari. I admire him a lot and I hope he can make his dreams come true."

Transfer Talk suggests Big Phil's dreams came true when his nemesis Pele was robbed at gunpoint.

Brian Woolnough of the Daily Star has linked Russia's Andrei Arshavin with a move to Chelsea too, despite the Zenit St Petersburg striker saying he wants to move to Spain. There can only be two reasons for this: a) Chelsea's owner is Russian, so it's a nice easy link; or b) Woolly really liked the pun "Arshavin cream" so much that he had to use it in a headline somehow.

Another striker seemingly linked with everyone this summer is Barca's Samuel Eto'o. The Cameroon hitman seems destined to leave the club, especially now the Catalan club want to raise funds to pay the exorbitant £32 million fee that Arsenal are apparently charging for Emmanuel Adebayor.

Good news for WAG-watching fans - German winger Bastian Schweinsteiger could be bringing his wily wing-play talents and his equally talented girlfriend Sarah Brandner to these shores after revealing he fancies a move to the Premier League.

The Bayern Munich midfielder said "England is one of the world's best leagues. I've always wanted to play there."

Finally, Valencia sent a scout out to run the rule over out-of-contract wastrel Harry Kewell as he played in Australia's defeat at the hands of China.

I if think arsene wenger dont want to go through next season without a trophy he should better be serious about buying more players, such as Asharvin, Senna, and can also exchange Hleb for Samuel Eto,and he should allow Adebayor to go for dat 20million, and use de money for other better player, bcos i can bet u dat adebayor will not do better dan last season.

  11. Wenger needs to add more than just Nasri to the Arsenal line up if he really wants to beat Utd or Chelsea this year, also, Arsenal have got to fend of Liverpool and Tottenham who are aiming high and hoping to brush aside the fluttering form of the past ten years....Perhaps the addition of Dutch left winger Van Der Vaart would be ideal, or Blackburn want away midlfielder Gmast Pederson (keen on Arsenal). Arsenal's defence could do with some extra backup, but not first team, but who wants to wait on the bench these days and learn a lot??

  12. Ronaldo what a bum! Presently a super hero playing for the biggest and best club in the world, the best manager and adored by the fans, and what does he want more money. That is what this is about, and what will a move to Madrid do for him, it will turn him into a REAL misfit a ex super hero, just another also ran, a bum. All us Utd fans just hope the SUPER REDS draw Madrid in the champions league dump them out and leave Ronaldo sitting on his BIG FAT EGO

  20. Tony K, you are incredulous. You mention disloyal "Johnny Foreigners" as if they are the complete antithesis of English/British players. It wasn't so long ago that Ashley Cole displayed unwavering loyalty, worthy only of a swift kick to the groin, and I don't refer to his extra-marital tendancies. It's not as if this is an isolated case either. The fact is that the majority of modern players value money above anything else. While we may frown upon this supposed lack of scruples, wouldn't we do the same? If a rival company offered me double my current salary for doing the exact same job, I would bite their hands off. @#$% company loyalty. Business is business, and anyone who says otherwise is living in la la land, or is a dumb @#$%. Also, does anyone know what the @#$% Don R is going on about in post number nine?
