Confederations Cup - Cannavaro slams Italian football

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Jun 17:42:00 2009

Italy's entire football infrastructure needs an overhaul, captain Fabio Cannavaro said after the world champions arrived home from their Confederations Cup nightmare.

Elimination in the group stages after defeats to Egypt and Brazil followed a difficult few weeks for Serie A, with Milan's Kaka sold to Real Madrid and other top players threatening to leave the stuttering league.

"We need reconstruction and not just the national team. Let's start with the infrastructure, the stadiums, but also the youth teams," the 35-year-old Juventus defender said.

Pundits have said Italy have too many ageing players and that coach Marcello Lippi is wrong to expect them to repeat their 2006 World Cup success in South Africa next year.

Domestically, Serie A clubs are losing out on revenue because, unlike English sides, they do not own their stadiums.

Milan have also said favourable Spanish tax laws make it difficult to compete in the transfer market with La Liga.

No Italian side reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season and few big name players look likely to head to Serie A for next term.

Promoting young Italians such as Internazionale's teenage full-back Davide Santon is the obvious answer but Cannavaro warned that the quality was lacking.

"Enough with this story about the oldies, if I really annoy people then my place is up for grabs but Lippi makes the decisions," added the defender, who equalled Paolo Maldini's all-time Italy caps record of 126 against Brazil.

"I don't see any phenomenons around in Italian football. There are no more Tottis, Baggios or Del Pieros. Today it is enough for a defender to be tall, cute, blonde and a dribbler and they think that makes them a good player."

Roma striker Francesco Totti retired from international football while fellow World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero, 34, has been overlooked by Lippi for almost a year.

  2. I rather watch miniature Golf than watch the Italian team. No entertainment whatsoever just lots of defending after miraculously scorring a goal

  4. The Italian team is full of old players. They need to rejuvenate the team with vibrant and young players so as be able to compete at the highest level. It is laughable for the Italians to be defeated by an African team and be trashed by the Brazilian to 3-0, making them to be heading home at the end of group stage. How is the mighty falling?

  5. Italy have a great youth prospect coming throu as Comment 3 said - i think the heavy defeat to Brazil is the best thing possible for Italy as this will shake the team up a bit. Thats exactly what cannavaro is at aswell, trying to movitate the younger players into shineing this season and setting italy up for a good world cup. Haha, and yes - pick Del Peiro :)

  7. We all see Cannavaro is not the same player this season in Real. The sad thing is Italy can't find anybody to replace him. Didn't Lippi said his job is easier than Capello's because he has 40% - 50% Italian players in the league to choose from? If there's not enough quality, you have nobody to choose from.

  8. Roma should have knocked out Arsenal from the Champions League if Baptista had kept that shot down, and Juventus lost only 3-2 agg. with 1 man down against Chelsea for half the return fixture (a lot better than Liverpool did). It wasn't a terrible champions league really, they were just a bit worse.

The actual national team is just weak. Don't pick players that aren't ready to perform (Toni, Gattuso, Pirlo, Zambrotta, Cannavaro). Quagliarella never got a chance, Pepe was used too late, Iaquinta was played out of position and Santon was never picked. I think Rossi did well (in one game, but hey that's better than nothing), as did Montolivo. There's hope, but unfortunately there's one VERY stubborn manager. Drop Toni and select Del Piero!!

  9. Best quote ever, "There are no more Tottis, Baggios or Del Pieros." Over the past few World Cups, Italy has always had a "hero" championing their side and taking the blame if they failed. There is noone even close to that on the current squad, and their title was won by their defense in 06. Now its a bunch of old farts spread out on the pitch. If they show up with this group to the next World Cup they won't make it past the group stage. This may be a lot of pressure to add on the youngsters but they need to start building the team around Giuseppi Rossi, he's far and away their biggest talent.

  10. yay but experience used to be the way of the game...these days the game has evolved, you no longer need a team full of 30 somethings with 100caps each

what good is 8 or 9 34/35+ year olds in international football, up against younger fitter and most definatley faster players
whilst experience does help at times, most the domestic leagues and international team play with fast players, rather than slow experienced ones...this is why the likes of ac milan and the italian national team struggled

lets hope ancelotti brings them all to chelsea....that'd be a laugh
