FA Cup - FA to hold auction as Setanta collapses

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Jun 17:15:00 2009

The FA will have to auction off the rights to FA Cup and England matches to cover a £100 million gap in their finances after Setanta went into administration.

Setanta's long-expected collapse was finally confirmed, and more than 200 people will be made redundant.

The Premier League on Monday announced ESPN as Setanta's replacement for their live games, and the FA will now have to go through the same process.

Setanta were one year into a £150 million four-year deal for the rights to FA Cup matches, England games and the Community Shield - and it is understood only £50 million of this had been paid.

The FA have been adamant they will still be able to attract significant bids to limit serious damage to funding for grass-roots football.

Nevertheless, there was major unhappiness at Soho Square after the Premier League last week refused to allow Setanta any more time to secure a rescue package and pulled the plug on their rights to live matches for next season and 2010-13.

Deloitte have been appointed as administrators, and Setanta will soon cease to broadcast to the UK.

It is understood ITV will gain the rights for up to eight England away friendlies at a previously-agreed price, but all of Setanta's other rights will be up for grabs.

Neville Kahn, one of the joint administrators, said: "After a huge effort by the Setanta board, management team and its backers, it has not been possible to save the GB business - which will be wound down in due course."

Setanta had 1.2 million subscribers and also had broadcast deals with the Scottish Premier League, the Blue Square Conference, cricket's Indian Premier League and golf's US PGA tour.

  1. Imagine if BBC got the Premier League games that would be awesome as we dont have to get sky sports anymore except most derbies are on sky.
I hope they do because ITV camera work is shocking.

  2. Hopefully all the rights mentioned in the article will be sold. Hopefully the SPL, Blue Square football and the England/FA Cup/Comm Shield will be bought by Sky.

  4. This is all about the greed issue, 100 million to show some football games, Why is it all about getting our money?
Footballers are very greedy, compared to the players that were playing 20 years ago, they were doing the same job, as were the players 60 years ago and they were paid not much more than anyone else who had a job.
Football used to be a game, now it is only about money, Liverpool pay 17 million for an average to good player, its complete madness, but it won't stop untill people stop putting up with it, stop buying shirts, season tickets and paying sky when most of the games are shown on the bbc, not the whole game, but the best bits, the boring stuff taken out, it was not too long ago that the bcc and itv could afford to show live England games, along with FA cup games and the top division games, but now it has been taken over by sky, no other channel gets any games unless sky does not want them.

  9. i had nothing but problems when i used setanta...but those were problems caused by the firm not the many kind and friendly call centre staff who did their best whilst their hands were tied by the procedures etc put in place by management.
it is those kind staff who are going o be without work that ultimatley pay the price for a badly ran business.
good luck to those people in finding alternate employment....

atleast wth sky when watchin live early mornin boxing from the states they dont cut off halfway thru the fight making you continue watching on a different channel number.......what was that all about lol
good ridance to the firm i say

  11. mike. Although I was not a fan of Setanta as I felt I already paid enough to Sky without having to pay more for a substandard package I think you have missed a vital point....The people who care are the 200 Setanta employees now OUT OF WORK because of this....If you are lucky enough to still hold a job I would suggest you think twice before posting comments like that.
