Lions 2009 - Hayes and Payne in Lions XV

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Jun 12:05:00 2009

Replacement props John Hayes and Tim Payne have been named in a British & Irish Lions XV captained by Ronan O'Gara for the clash with the Emerging Springboks in Cape Town on Tuesday.

John Hayes - Munster - 0

Ireland tight-head Hayes (pictured) was called up last week to replace tour victim Euan Murray while Payne travelled to South Africa at the weekend to provide cover for England team-mate Andrew Sheridan, struggling with a sore back.

"The two latest squad members Tim Payne and John Hayes will start against the Emerging Springboks to give them immediate field time," said Lions head coach Ian McGeechan.

"This is important in terms of the balance of the squad as three of our other props played in the Test match only two days ago and Andrew Sheridan is recovering from injury."

O'Gara becomes the fifth player to captain the Lions in 2009, following Paul O'Connell, Brian O'Driscoll, Phil Vickery and Donncha O'Callaghan.

"Ronan O'Gara will lead the team against the Emerging Springboks which is a well deserved honour for a senior player who has served Munster, Ireland and the Lions with distinction," added McGeechan.

The Lions were beaten 26-21 in the first Test last weekend and the match squad for the Emerging Springboks gives one or two indications of McGeechan's thinking for the second Test in Pretoria on Saturday.

Of particular concern for the Lions was the front row, where England prop Vickery struggled at the scrums and was replaced by Wales' Adam Jones.

Vickery is on the bench for the Emerging Springboks which suggests Jones will start the second Test.

Hooker Lee Mears also had a difficult time in Durban and was replaced by Wales' Matthew Rees, who impressed with his throwing and play in the loose after coming on.

Mears provides cover for hooker Ross Ford on Tuesday, which again suggests the Englishman will not start the second Test.

A change to the Lions second row has also been muted after their pack were dominated by the Springboks, with a heavier lock called for to add power in the scrum.

Nathan Hines and O'Callaghan will start in the second row against the Emerging Lions, with Simon Shaw on the bench, which could be an indication the Englishman is in line for a role in the second Test squad.

Martyn Williams starts at openside against the Emerging Springboks and will hope to increase competition on Test starter David Wallace, who is among the replacements.

Williams's Wales team-mate Andy Powell could also play himself into the reckoning at number eight after Jamie Heaslip struggled to impose himself against the powerful Boks pack in Durban.

Wales' James Hook has recovered from a knock to the head and is named on the bench, where he is joined by wing Ugo Monye, a starter against the Springboks.

Monye failed to convert two guilt-edged chances in the first Test and his place could come under threat if Luke Fitzgerald and Shane Williams impresses at Newlands.

Lions: 15-Keith Earls, 14-Shane Williams, 13-Riki Flutey, 12-Gordon D'Arcy, 11-Luke Fitzgerald, 10-Ronan O'Gara, 9-Harry Ellis; 8-Andy Powell, 7-Martyn Williams, 6-Joe Worsley- 5-Nathan Hines, 4-Donncha O'Callaghan, 3-John Hayes, 2-Ross Ford, 1-Tim Payne.

Replacements: 16-Lee Mears, 17-Phil Vickery, 18-Simon Shaw, 19-David Wallace, 20-Mike Blair, 21-James Hook, 22-Ugo Monye.

Emerging Springboks: 15-Zane Kirchner, 14-Luzuko Vulindlu, 13-Deon van Rensburg, 12-Morgan Newman, 11-Bjorn Basson, 10-Earl Rose, 9-Jano Vermaak; 8-Duane Vermeulen, 7-Jean Deysel, 6-Dewald Potgieter (capt), 5-Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4-Steven Sykes, 3-Werner Kruger, 2-Bandise Maku, 1-Wian du Preez .

  2. how about instead of knocking the guys that did not quite perform to their potential lets get behind the ones that are chosen i love this game with a passion but i am man enough to admit geech knows more than i ever could and if he puts a man in its for a good reason sure ugo cocked up, but its not his fault we were playing 16 men, lets hope if that happens again we have the sense to play a game that cant be faulted even if that means putting it up the jumper and take route one

  11. s27prs, you write very well for a three year old. Ask your daddy about 2005.

Heaslip didnt make much of a mark its true, but he's by far the best option we have off the back of a solid scrum (assuming we can get one of those). If the lions get parity there heaslip's athleticism and pace are going to cause major problems for the boks.

Powell has been fooling people for far too long. He cuts a great figure running off with the ball in one hand but the only yards he makes are across the pitch. Either that or its straight into contact where he tries too hard to make an extra foot of ground and ends up losing the ball because he hasnt presented it in time.
I was surprised he got the call up in the first place and im surprised he hasnt been sussed before now. fraud.

  12. It`s down to the geech now, who wins the next two games.
These are the most important games of the tour now.
The Lions can rip them apart, just give them the ball.
It`s a great game of skill, not just brawn.
    Long life the Lions tour!
Good Luck guys, you are Lions! ROAR!ON ROAR!

The Lions are becoming a lost cause, which is sad in a way. All you have to do is look at the comments coming in , the selsection is fraught with appeasement and completely flawed and always will be. The current tour being a bigger disaster than any in living memory.

  20. apdmanning - you sure he will, would've expected all the on form guys to convert their chances but that's the beauty of sport, it often does not work like that.
Based on what we have seen so far Williams who is currently not sharp would not have been in Ugo's position to get the chance to go for the try line. Vickery has been in great form so far this series but had a bad day on Saturday which can happen as we all know. My disappointment in that was to see him emerge in the second half, Jones should've come on at the 30 minute mark and without doubt at half time. Poor management decision that, I know they wanted to give him a chance to turn it around but in test rugby you don't have the luxury of time. It would've been brutal but he should've been off.

Real disappointed in the number of penalties given away, have they been studying the England form book. Come on guys you just can't keep offending you will be punished, I mean look at Rees when he came on, penalty 5 yards out giving the Boks the ball back. What a stupid way to lose an attacking platform and there were many examples of that sort of daftness.

And as for trying to play ping pong with Steyn what were they trying to do. He gave it back with interest every time. Couldn't kick for touch because they were ineffective in the lineout, when the penny finally dropped to keep it in hand the backs were brilliant and looked threatening. They did not know what to do or who to double up on, they were constantly worried about BOD and now they now about the fantastic line breaking potential of Roberts.
How good a combination were BOD and Roberts, fantastic to see and a real hope. As everyone knows quick ball will open the game up so why did they want to keep going into contact with a pack that was winning that battle hands down on the day.

Took too long to change the game plan and missed far too many fantastic chances. What a game though, I was hoarse afterwards, really tho
