Hull manager Phil Brown has revealed the club intends to speak to Michael Owen's representatives "within the week".
Owen confirmed on Monday he will be leaving Newcastle at the end of his contract with the former England striker available on a free transfer.
"We will be speaking to Michael's representatives within the week," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail. "I would think he would have a number of offers and we'll have to be competitive."
He added: "But I wouldn't sit down with him if I thought I was wasting my time. Anything is possible in football."
Owen claimed the link with Hull was a "new one" to him when asked about the possibility of moving to the KC Stadium.
But Brown is adamant the lure of first-team football could tempt Owen to Humberside.
He added: "I don't think Michael will go for the best financial offer, I don't think it's about that for him at this stage of his career, he'll want the best offer for his future.
"He needs to spend a high percentage of next season's games at the highest possible level and that's where we can come in."
Brown acknowledged a player with Owen's record would not come cheap, saying: "Breaking the bank is not a term the chairman would be keen on. But he's certainly someone that you would push the boat out for. He's a world-class international footballer."

THE ONLY WAY OWEN WILL SIGN !! IF THERE IS A BETTNG SHOP NR BY
OWEN YOU ARE PAST YOUR SELL BY AND HULL ARE @#$%
dont sign the sick note never fit more interested in gabling
pathetic - thats most of the comments so far about newcastle, geordies, hull and all the rest - Owen IS a good player still, maybe not the man as before but he'll grace any pitch here or abroad for a few years yet, Newcastle fans who say good rid u are just a bunch of losers and moaners, get rid of the @#$% starting at the top, Hull mite be a small club compared to some but they are still in the Premier, are you? I hope he finds a good manager and a good bunch round him, good luck Michael.
Well I suppose that I might of got that wrong and obviously ruffled a few sporans in fact I forgot what they say about the Geordies that we are like the Scots but we have not got the English to blame for our problems
Geordie english David A? I've been to all parts of england, and was shocked that geordies aren't even considered english further south!! a hate to say it but people like you make me understand why
DAVID A, you are a rodent, I am scottish and a Newcastle fan, but your comments are a disgrace to this page, think its cool to refer to rape in this manner as if boasting! sums you up pretty well then eh? virgin?
Owen, just go, and stop talking cr.ap. Be glad to see the back of you.
YES. GO GET HIM TANGO GADGY AND SEE WHERE IT GETS YOU. OR IS THIS JUST A ( FREDDY SHEPHERD STYLE ) PUBLICITY STUNT TOO BIG UP THE NAME OF hull? hull IS JUST A SMALL POXY CLUB. GET RELEGATED. YOUR VERY PRESENCE UNDERMINES THE STATUS OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE.
If you're going to play in the Championship just stay at Newcastle. I can't see them staying in the Coca Cola league long. Can't say the same for Hull.
sappercommando25,sounds like a right little action man probably runs around in a darth vader mask as well. After his comments he probably forgets that us Geordies had quite a little enterprise going a few years ago. Every time that the scots bread a few cattle and sheep we used to nip over the border and pinch them. As the winter nights got longer we also took up raping a few of their women as well. Never mind sappercommando25, just think about the Geordie English and the great impression our genes made to the scotch brain and also that we may be related.
notobrown comment 148:
Nonsense
You choose to use a name like "SapperCommando25", yet you call the British (probably aimed at the English) idiotic. If a you are really a "Sapper Commando" you're supposed to stand up and fight for Britain, not insult it's people.
Maybe the English team havn't had the best time over the last few decades, but you have to remember they have done better than any other UK national team. The English League is also one of the best in the world too.
owen going to hull!! has the world gone crazy???? he is still a very good striker! save money that you would spend on looking for a forward and spend it on owens wages! i know it would be great business for the top 4!!!
retire u idiot all u did was score that goal against argies
Owen to Hull???????????? No way, I thought he was going to go to Italy?
Check out this blog myeurosoocer.blogspot com, very nice.
The sooner July 1st gets here the better; at least this pathetic loser can no longer be associated with NUFC.
A disgrace to professional football; whoever is daft enough to take this selfish leech on deserve all they get . . . . which won't be goals by the way.
What a joke is Owen 1 time he had the world at his feet now he's goin to hull city ha ha scouse w~~~ker
stockport would'nt sign the little c££t on a free owen go;arn polish ya pony's helmet!!!!
Hull would be good for him. He would get regular first team and from this he would improve his physical condition and get back somewhere near his best. He is too old to regain that top pot but he would be a precious gift for england who have bugger all to play with.
I dont think he'll be suited to hull team
