Hull manager Phil Brown has revealed the club intends to speak to Michael Owen's representatives "within the week".
Owen confirmed on Monday he will be leaving Newcastle at the end of his contract with the former England striker available on a free transfer.
"We will be speaking to Michael's representatives within the week," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail. "I would think he would have a number of offers and we'll have to be competitive."
He added: "But I wouldn't sit down with him if I thought I was wasting my time. Anything is possible in football."
Owen claimed the link with Hull was a "new one" to him when asked about the possibility of moving to the KC Stadium.
But Brown is adamant the lure of first-team football could tempt Owen to Humberside.
He added: "I don't think Michael will go for the best financial offer, I don't think it's about that for him at this stage of his career, he'll want the best offer for his future.
"He needs to spend a high percentage of next season's games at the highest possible level and that's where we can come in."
Brown acknowledged a player with Owen's record would not come cheap, saying: "Breaking the bank is not a term the chairman would be keen on. But he's certainly someone that you would push the boat out for. He's a world-class international footballer."

I have to laugh..........
He's fleeced us for years & hardly ever played,so now he wants to take another team down from the Prem.
He'd be better off playing with his precious frigging horses..............
Although Owen has played rubbish recently ....
for Man Utd he would be a bargain. No transfer fee. You telling me Owen wouldn't go to Man Utd for a moderate salary to almost complete his set of top clubs and potentially get some medals. Only needs about nine appearances as a sub to pick up a medal if Man U manage to win the league.
not much difference from newcastle to hull both sh ite and no ambition but good luck anyway owen
HULL A MEEN. SAME FING A SAPOSE.
MECHAL OWANS AS GOAN TAY HELL THAN.
Really ?lol.........Just heard that he is ho-oking up with a nice gi-rl on the inter-esting cl-ub called: ____BigTalls Co M____, really ? Sounds it is a famoaus on-line service.
hes a skud book
I discorvered a hot place

Michael Owen is nothing but a diminutive bad joke of a so-called striker. Anyone even thinking of signing him has no football judgment whatsoever. It would be like flushing all one's money down the toilet.
owen will be relegated for the 2nd time next season
I can only laugh (still) at Owen, he left us(Liverpool) to go and win things, first up was madrid where he warmed their bench as we won the Champs League, then off to newcastle, by which point, we added the FA Cup these days we finish second in the League, losing only twice and all Owen can do is look on as he and his team-mates rub their hands in excitement at playing Championship football next season, now we hear his only real option is Hull. YNWA
PLS SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!OWEN IN HULL CITY SHIRT!!!!!!!!!IS EQUAL TO RELEGATION.....SOMEBODY HELP.........COME TO HOLLAND AND PLAY FOR ADO DEN HAAG,,,,WELL I REST MY CASE???????????
lol he hung around at newcastle thinking that a top 4 club would come sniffing and look now....HULL ! Maybe if he'd pulled his head out of his arse he'd still be in the prem with a bigger club! I notice all the manc's are queing up for him? Ronaldo and tevez for Owen....HaHa they deserve each other
Owen is still a world-class striker and he deserves playing in a good team, not in rubbish newcastle united.even in this season, when he was fit he always scored and finished season as newcastle's highest goalsorer.he is right to leave newcastle and fans blame him just because he's leaving on a free.newcastle's supporters must be angry at coloccini, jose enrique, geremi, and mostly at alan smith, the most useless player i've ever seen.unlike them, owen was always trying his best when he was fit,but this season mostly he wasn't .I still remember his brace when he was not fully recovered,I forgot against which team he did it but capello attended that match.I hope he will find a good team and return to england's squad.he's better than defoe and bent together and england needs him
He would be an asset to any club if he could stay fit but lets face it hes in for a week, out for a month. Hull need someone who will be at the top his game all season, i dont think it would be a good move for either party.
Owen back to Anfield to benchwarm for one season then he's off to Australia.
Liverpool are only taking him back to stop the toffees from getting him ( secret talks are iminent)...........Forget Hull.
LFC forever.
he can come to man united we need a new water boy
Owen is best player in PL. But problem with a manager to put him in right position and right partner. Just remember when he was playing at Liverpool he was a star because Gerrard was deliverig then he scored. Now he was alone. Nobody can do it at Newcastle. There was not a passing game just all players tried to score. Even put a best strike in world (Eto, Roony,Henry e.g.) inisted of Owen they wouldn't play in that circumstances. I think the right team for him is Man U.
HULL MUST BE NUTS TO GET MICHAEL OWEN. IF THEY DO AND NEXT SEASON THEY BE OUT OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE. ALSO MICHEAL OWEN WOULD GO TO THE NEXT PREMIER LEAGUE CULB. WHAT F***KING IDIOTS HULL MUST BE.
GO TO LIVERPOOL OR BAYERN MUNICH (MUNCHEN) MICHAEL OWEN.
Im sure that my grandad could score with more women than Owen does goals
