Premier League - Hull talks for Owen this week

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Jun 20:05:00 2009

Hull manager Phil Brown has revealed the club intends to speak to Michael Owen's representatives "within the week".

2008-2009 Newcastle United Michael Owen - 0

Owen confirmed on Monday he will be leaving Newcastle at the end of his contract with the former England striker available on a free transfer.

"We will be speaking to Michael's representatives within the week," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail. "I would think he would have a number of offers and we'll have to be competitive."

He added: "But I wouldn't sit down with him if I thought I was wasting my time. Anything is possible in football."

Owen claimed the link with Hull was a "new one" to him when asked about the possibility of moving to the KC Stadium.

But Brown is adamant the lure of first-team football could tempt Owen to Humberside.

He added: "I don't think Michael will go for the best financial offer, I don't think it's about that for him at this stage of his career, he'll want the best offer for his future.

"He needs to spend a high percentage of next season's games at the highest possible level and that's where we can come in."

Brown acknowledged a player with Owen's record would not come cheap, saying: "Breaking the bank is not a term the chairman would be keen on. But he's certainly someone that you would push the boat out for. He's a world-class international footballer."

  1. As a liverpool fan I used to idolise Michael Owen but as soon as he said he was leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid it showed what a money grabbing mercenary he really is, he never intended signing a new contract with us waited until he had 12 months remaining and left us for less than half of what he was worth at the time in order to get a massive signing on fee. Since then he has only played a handfull of England games, played less than 60% of Newcastles games, helped get them relegated, lost his place in the England squad and now has the giants of Hull looking at him and the giants of Wigan saying they're not interested, Liverpool on the other hand have won the Champions league and been to another final, won the Fa.cup signed world class players like Mascherano, Alonso, Torres and Reina and last season finished with their highest ever premiership points total.......grass aint always greener is it???

You are correct in this statement. On the same token, I feel that if there would a UK national side created, the pick would be 95% English anyway. I think that this has always been the argument against a UK side. It is unfortunate that the English are so anti everything else that is not English. This is their undoing and they are they have proven to be their own worst enemiies.
On the broader scale, Scottish also have had many inventors too and this was never recognised by the arrogant English. So if the English are nothing but a bunch of brainless separatists, why are the Scots, Welsh and the Northern Irish not independant from them. As far as the United Kingdom goes, where would the toffy nosed, arrogant English be without the rest....they'd be even less then they already are.

  4. Sappercommando - It's because England think they are too good to have to join forces with the likes of Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Until they realise they've won nowt for longer than Newcastle, they'll continue to be nothing more than "pretty good".

  5. I addition to my earlier comment hopefully he will go to Hull because the alternative is a lucrative BBC deal and yet another moron commentating on next years world cup (aka Gary Linnecor)

  9. At the end of the day, Michael Owen is just another one in long list of English players, never reaching their mark and for this reason, England as a national side shall only ever be pretty good and nothing more. What is the use of being pretty good if the national side has not achieved anything since 1966? Why do the idiotic British not join forces and make a UK national team? Wouldn't that solve the problem with their trophy drought?

  10. He can share a sick bay with Jimmy Bullard. Bye bye Mickey, thans for keeping us up the season before last, but good riddance to the limp performance of the season just gone. Hope you're enjoying your cash.

  11. Money grabbing back stabbing un-loyal muppet would not wish him on anyone that has to pay his wages through turnstile reciepts as he'll bankrupt you and show no remorse. Everyone stated as he helped Newcastle go down stand up and be counted in giving them a season in return (DOH)!!! No I did not want to move in January when people had to pay for my services now i'm a free agent i'm going to screw some other team.

  13. If owen can see past the greed that so far has blighted his career than there is every chance this will be a perfect move for the club and player.

If he cant then he wont be going to Hull and we'll see him disappoint yet again!

  16. So sick note is off to Hull tokeep the backroom staff in a job.
    Makes sense.

Probaly score five goals for you, all from the spot when he is brought on with the crutches.
What a joke for any Prem club to buy an overated has been who has always been proteced.
He is finished Hull, get a grip a past big name is now a poacher that is why He will sign for Hull, no one else wants to know.

The Boro would have give him a chance at around 800, 000 just to show on the training ground how not to get injured when someone has the cheek to get the ball from him.
    Totaly overated bally dancer.

Looks like NUFC are very clued up on how to get back up, makes me smile.
Hull down next season, Boro up and NUFC further down the shoot.
Should I say this because I keep hearing what a great club they are, massive and so on.
    What a laugh eh.
No owner, no Manager, no real want to stay players.
    Yup a great club.
The great hero has played the press, running scared now in case he is asked to do the job.
Your only saviour is Keegan, AGAIN but that is waht to expect from such a great club who are down and won nothing.
    Yup a great club.

Play the kids, or have you got any to play???????

Come on NUFC you are starting to think you are the best in the Champ already, truth is you are the worst.
Where is investment coming from, dream on.

How I hope you go up with the Boro next time out, for some reason I do not see it.
We at Boro are the great North East team, you will learn from this as we have done it a few times already.

As for the Sunderland, I only wish they put on a good show for the North East with the majors.
Owen leaving, I have tears now, for the CLUB that will take him on.

As for you lot at NUFC get the boots polished for a hard season.
It is not that easy and a great club will pull out on the first attempt, BORO.

  19. Michael Owen is too injury prone now , and should have a pay as you play contract. That would be fair to club and player. Give him incentives to play ,ie, goal bonus, so many consecutive games, goal assists etc.Istill think he is a capable striker, but NUFC left him out on a limb at times I think

  20. Poor Michael Owen...

From the Golden Boy of English Football, to the bench at Real Madrid, to relegation at Newcastle, to struggling for Premiership survival and on the pitch bollockings from your manager...

Where did it all go wrong eh?
