Hull manager Phil Brown has revealed the club intends to speak to Michael Owen's representatives "within the week".
Owen confirmed on Monday he will be leaving Newcastle at the end of his contract with the former England striker available on a free transfer.
"We will be speaking to Michael's representatives within the week," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail. "I would think he would have a number of offers and we'll have to be competitive."
He added: "But I wouldn't sit down with him if I thought I was wasting my time. Anything is possible in football."
Owen claimed the link with Hull was a "new one" to him when asked about the possibility of moving to the KC Stadium.
But Brown is adamant the lure of first-team football could tempt Owen to Humberside.
He added: "I don't think Michael will go for the best financial offer, I don't think it's about that for him at this stage of his career, he'll want the best offer for his future.
"He needs to spend a high percentage of next season's games at the highest possible level and that's where we can come in."
Brown acknowledged a player with Owen's record would not come cheap, saying: "Breaking the bank is not a term the chairman would be keen on. But he's certainly someone that you would push the boat out for. He's a world-class international footballer."

STAY AT NEWCASTLE OWEN AT LEAST YOU HAVE A JOB THERE AS IT WOULD APPEAR NOBODY OF ANY NOTE IS CHASING YOUR HAS BEEN TALENTS ???????????????
Owen, go in to Parliament. Your money grabbing talents would stand you in good stead with the snouts in the trough brigade at Westminster.

if i was him i'd retire instead of joining hull, the ultimate humiliation of a once great player. so deserved aswell. moneygrabbing little $£~#"
It is a great shame how people forget easily isn't it. Owen did a great job at Liverpool and also for his country.
I have to agree with alot of people on here, Owen has not only got injured to often he stopped doing anything to get fit again. Just like all the premier league managers apart from Hull boss they have realised Owen is simply milking the cash cow, many other top players have suffered identical problems but have undergone constant physio to play the maxium games he seems uninterested with the game and when he plays his body language speaks a thousand negative words so I have one word for him...Quit!
The bitterness of Newcastle fans amazes me,You gave him the contract and he got injured....
Hindsight anyone.
He's still got 3 weeks left to cash another £360,000 on he's salary hehe, he's got the balls...
Just hope Mr O'neil does'nt sign him!!! waste of space, rather stick with Heskey.... up the Villa boys
Thanks for nothing Owen, take your millions earned and give a final V sign to all those that paid your wages for 4 years while you did nothing.
You wouldn't know passion if it smacked you in the face!
ANY PREMIER LEAGUE COACH THAT BUYS THIS STRIKER SHOULD BE SACKED.WHAT DID NEWCASTLE GAIN FROM HIM?NOTHING.YES IN HIS DAYS HE WAS GOOD BUT WE DONT LIVE IN THE PAST WE LIVE IN THE PRESENT
All the best to Owen, he was an insane player when he was a youngster, very fast nd full of tricks, but way past his prime, hopefully he'll shine at Hull if he goes, or wherever he'll end up.
Michael Owen shows up the football game for what it really is today. He's not the only one, they are all at it.
The fans are bred to believe in loyalty, and whilst they attend in their droves, the system milks their pockets.
I think he was put off by newcastle's new away kit.
There`s been no team breaking down the doors at SJP to sign this £16m failure.
The thing is, there seems to be no mad rush from premiership clubs to sign him, maybe because he is injury prone and a touch over-rated.
Michael, you were never a Newcastle United player. You just cashed in on the overhyped salary and milked their bank accounts. Waste of space.
He may get millions for his horses sperm, but sincerely doubt anyone would pay him for his, not with his recent run of form, anyway!
YOU CANT BLAME OWEN FOR NEWCASTLE GETTING RELEGATED THE WHOLE TEAM WAS A JOKE AND BRINGING SHEARER IN AS MANAGER WHAT A JOKE THAT WAS LOL GOOD LUCK NEXT SEASON IN THE LEAGUE YOU DESERVE TO BE IN HAHA
michael is a fantastic player and isnt apprieciated in england he should do himself and his family a favour and speak to paul gascoine and ask him what area in glasgow would be nice to live he would be in the first team at ibrox if he stayed fit and he wouldn,t be giving up champions league football for a mid division premier league club no offence to hull but owen isnt 19 and it will be a good 10years before he will win anything with hull so lets convince a legend of the game to think higher and join the scottish champs
