Premier League - Mascherano pride at Spain link

Javier Mascherano has said he was proud to learn of interest in him from Barcelona and Real Madrid, but is happy at Liverpool.

The midfielder said transfer talk linking him to Spain's 'big two' was a form of recognition, with both clubs prepared to offer around £25 million for the Argentina captain.

"It's really flattering. For me it means great recognition because we are talking about big clubs," said Mascherano, who still has three years left on his contract at Anfield.

"I feel comfortable at Liverpool, but it's always good to know that teams like Barca and Madrid are interested in you. I feel very grateful."

Mascherano arrived at Anfield in January 2007 after half a season with West Ham, and the Merseyside club have since completed his signing from third-party management group MSI.

  7. This is just a combination of a players agent and the­ press creating a story out of nothing. At no point has­ Mascherano said he wants to leave nor has he submitted­ a transfer request. The club officially stated they­ have no intention of selling Maschherano or Alonso.­ Benitez had finally got the team playing really well,­ so why on earth would he then dismantle the first­ choice central medifield pairing that makes it all­ tick. I think all Mascherano wants is parity of pay for­ what he brings to the team. Remember none of the other­ highly paid stars of our team could or would do his­ job.
