Transfers - Your view: Owen still got it?

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Jun 09:19:00 2009

Michael Owen may be set for a Premier League lifeline, thanks to Hull City's interest, but is the Newcastle striker still able to cut it at the highest level?

2008-2009 Newcastle United Michael Owen - 0

Plagued by injury over recent years, the England international has struggled for both fitness and form at St James' Park.

He managed just 10 goals last season and rarely looked like the player that once saw him crowned European footballer of the year.

That said, Owen is a natural goalscorer. Does that instinct for the back of the net ever leave a player of Owen's pedigree? Does he just need a run in the side, free from injury, to regain his form?

Certainly Phil Brown seems to think so. If the Tigers get their man, will it prove to be a masterstroke or will Owen turn out to be a white elephant?

What do you think? Have your say below, or on the message boards, via the link below the photo.

Here's what some of you have said already:

WORTH A PUNT

saalemnok: "If Owen wants to prove he can stay fit and still do it at this level then yes this is the right move for him. But he'll have to take a hefty pay cut to prove himself. Is he ready to do this? It all depends on if he wants to prove that he is still a hungry class striker or the has-been most think he now is."

djarmstrong1984: "If he's fit he'll score. Owen's not had a great supply since he's been at the Toon, if he gets the ball in the right area he'll put it away, he's got the natural ability to finish and that's something he'll always have. Definitely worth the risk."

dunkerfour: "I think he is still worth a shot, no transfer fee and if you can get the right pay as you play deal he's worth a gamble for anyone."

Roland: "Of course he is still worth it. Owen just needs to be free from injuries for six months and all his confidence will come back. You don't just go from being world class to being average overnight."

paul67taylor: "I think he is worth a go but only if he severely drops his wage demands."

STEER WELL CLEAR

G: "Why would anyone in their right mind take a gamble like this? Even with a pay-for-play, the amount you spend on salary could be much better spent bringing up a young talent or two. Owen's career is done, deal with it. "

Kevin H: "If I was Hull I would give it a wide birth and look elsewhere unless they are looking for a shirt seller?"

Joseph: "Sound move by Phil Brown, I guess Jimmy Bullard needs somebody to keep in company in the treatment room and play cards with."

Sloaney lad: "I'm just relieved he's not coming back to Liverpool. The man's gone crackers recently, claiming he'd find it difficult to live on 40,000 a week. Some nerve on the man coming out with that kind of statement after spending most of his career in two working class cities that have struggled with employment since being ravaged by Thatcher in the eighties."

steveandnou: "He failed in the relegation battle for Toon so what difference would it be at Hull? As proven at the Toon he can't play the link up role and striker - the only way he can score is played up front off the shoulder off the defender."

AntiBrand: "A lot has been said about a lack of service, I don't buy into that, if you are a really great player then you don't rely on others, if its not happening then you make it happen. It is too easy to blame everyone else. Make no mistake he was a great player a hat trick against the Germans says it all but those days are gone and if he does not watch out he will just be a has-been who slides done the leagues and that would be a shame."

sappercommando25: "He lost it the moment he left Liverpool on the ill fated Real Madrid adventure. Not that this has in any way diminished that account of his though."

  3. Owen has never fitted in at Newcastle it`s as simple as that.
If Hull do buy him, it should be on a pay-per-game contract. They won`t be paying out much.

  4. If Phil Brown buys him then Mr Owen will be his problem/saviour.Newcastle need the money and need committed new players.

  5. Owen is still a deadly striker. At Newcastle he did not have the midfield that could make him deadly. Going back to collect the ball instead of getting a decissive pass can make a world of a difference. Hull may not have the required midfield so he may fail again.

  6. I have read all the valid comments that have been made, but as a Toon supporter who saw every match last season it pains me to say that for a majority of the time MO just did not look intrested. I don't know if it was a case of lacking confidence, or facing up to the fact that the Toon was going down so why bother. A lot has been said about a lack of service, I don't buy into that, if you are a really great player then you dont rely on others, if its not happening then you make it happen. It is to easy to blame everyone else. Make no mistake he was a great player a hat trick against the Germans says it all but those days are gone and if he does not watch out he will just be a hasbeen who slides done the leagues and that would be a shame.

  7. He needs a strict training plan to keep him fit and injury free. With all the management and coaching staff swaps at Newcastle he didn't stand a chance. I think Phil Brown would be a good manager for Owen to work with as he is a big on modern player-taylored training. Scoring 10 goals in a season for a team that eventually got relegated is pretty damn good and better than anyone Hull City currently have. I say he is worth a punt. Up the Tigers.

  8. He's done, only football league in middle east like Uzbek or Qatar fits Michael Owen.

  9. too inconsistent. hasn't hit form for a long long time. he'd be better of going to the spl

As proven at the Toon he can't play the link up role and striker - the only way he can score is played up front off the shoulder off the defender.

He needs he head looking at if he moves to Hull - out of the frying pan into the fire springs to mind! I wonder how he'd respond to an on field 'team talk' held by the Head Umpalumpa?

It's all good and well Hull being interested but unfortunately for them he needs to be interested in playing for them!

His time at the toon has done him no favours not just because of injuries but because of the shambles of a 'team' (used in the loosest term possible) around him. Put him in a decent team that makes chances and I am convinced he'll be knocking them in again - however that team ain't Hull!

From steveandnou, on Mon 22 Jun 11:58AM
  11. I have to laugh Wigan put in the 10 million bid to bring him to Wigan and he chose Newcastle because it is a bigger team.
Then that year Wigan played Newcastle and beat them with him in the side it was excellent.
He is a has been and always will be because of his injuries that keep coming back.
When his knee went from underneath him that was the end of him.
The same happened to Jimmy Bullard now he is not the same.
On both occasions Wigan have had a lucky escape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So it's either a great gamble that will pay off for Hull or a egg on their face job.

Personally I hope he does sign and the old Michael Owen comeback. Lets face it. England doesn't have any really top quality up front apart from Rooney.

From saalemnok, on Mon 22 Jun 11:33AM
  13. Owen is a player who needs quality support in order to get the goals, he didn't have it at Newcastle and I doubt he'll have it at Hull. He needs to play for a better club in order to regain his form, I hope Liverpool, but wherever is ok as long as we see the Owen we used to know and love:)

  14. I'm just relieved he's not coming back to Liverpool. Hilarious that he left to pursue European honours and Liverpool lifted the trophy. The man's gone crackers recently, claiming he'd find it difficult to live on 40,000 a week. Some nerve on the man coming out with that kind of statement after spending most of his career in two working class cities that have struggled with employment since being ravaged by Thatcher in the eighties. I'd be happy to see him in the Championship, getting kicked around the park, maybe some time spent with players who can only dream of the money he's made over the years will give him the wake-up call he so obviously needs.

From Sloaney lad, on Mon 22 Jun 11:06AM
  15. I think he is worth a go but only if he severely drops his wage demands. Yes he was injured but how many players go to Newcastle on huge wages then get long term injuries. Lets also bear in mind his lack of goals. He was playing in a very poor Newcastle team who couldn't hit a barn door with a pick up truck so going to a side that makes chances he will be fine. I would like him at West Ham

  17. People say that he played in an NUFC team that didn't create chances; believe me, in most of the games he played (which wasn't a lot btw!) he had chances, sitters in fact, and he blew them all! He's finished, he no longer has the pace, and the cutting edge has gone.

  19. We'd have him in a flash at Birmingham City. Just what we need to help us stay up this time. Our defence is sound but we don't score goals.

  20. Sound move by Phil Brown, I guess Jimmy Bullard needs somebody to keep in company in the treatment room and play cards with! joking apart though, I agree that he's a risk unless he was/is willing to take a severe pay cut. He did seem to be beginning to show a little form at the end of last season when finally injury free under Keegan so maybe all is not lost!
