Only Shearer can unite Magpies

Tue 23 Jun, 02:57 PM

Former Newcastle defender Nikos Dabizas insists only a lunatic would not appoint Alan Shearer as manager.

The 35-year-old Greece international spent five years at St James' Park with Shearer and believes he is the only man who can re-unite a club which is in turmoil on and off the pitch.

Dabizas said: "One thing is for sure, Alan is the only man who can unite the fans, the players and the club.

"If I was chairman, I would have him as manager. You would have to be a lunatic not to put him in charge. He's the only person the fans will have. He's an idol, inspirational.

"When the team was relegated, the reaction of the fans was unbelievable. That last game was live on Greek television and people were asking me 'How come such a big club can be relegated and the fans are still applauding?'.

"I told them it is because of Alan Shearer, they are cheering for him. You cannot blame him, you cannot judge him yet. He can be a shield to the club. It needs protecting and with him there, he can do that. The owner you can criticise because his decisions have cost the club. But Alan is the right man. It's a new era and hopefully he can get the chance to turn it around."

Ha! Ha! Shearer should have signed for Man Utd, the daft lad.

  13. Nikos Dabizas. Pity he`s not a few years younger we could do with him in the defence.
I`d like Shearer to be manager but, It`s dragged on for so long now with the on-off purchase of NUFC, I think Shearer has only a certain amount of patience before he gets pi**ed off and calls it a day.

  14. The sooner the club's ownership is settled the sooner Ncl can concentrate on the stuff that really matters - the football.
At this moment in time if I was Shearer, I wouldn't touch the job with a Sunderland supporter because of all of the backroom uncertainty. Once that's settled they can go forward.
