Southend have lost out on their bid to bring Theo Robinson to Roots Hall on a permanent basis.
Robinson spent a spell on loan from Watford last season and scored seven goals in 20 appearances.
Shrimpers manager Steve Tilson told the club's official website: "Obviously first and foremost it's disappointing that we don't have Theo back with us next season."
He added: "He did well during the loan he had with us and it would have been great to have him back, but with him being available for £275,000, that blew us out of the water really.
"Signing a striker isn't really a priority; it's bringing in a new left-back and a centre-back."
