Hearts snub for Old Firm ticketing plan

Wed 23 Jul, 06:15 PM

Hearts have followed Falkirk's lead by rejecting requests from the Old Firm to be compensated for selling tickets for away games. Both Rangers and Celtic wrote to their fellow Scottish Premier League clubs asking for a five per cent handling fee to sell tickets to their own travelling support.

Falkirk announced on Monday night that they would take on the responsibility of selling tickets to Rangers fans for their opening SPL game, rather than pay the levy.

And Hearts have also rejected the demands from the two Glasgow clubs.

Managing director Campbell Ogilvie, a former Rangers secretary, told the club's official website: "We received letters from both Rangers and Celtic regarding a proposal to charge a five per cent handling fee for the administration of those club's ticket sales at Tynecastle.

"We have made it quite clear that we will not accept any levy being deducted from tickets sold by either club in respect of matches being played between these clubs and Hearts at Tynecastle Stadium.

"We will therefore require to consider in detail how tickets will be distributed to supporters of Rangers and Celtic at forthcoming matches at our stadium."

Hearts have several months to devise a plan as Celtic are the first Old Firm side to visit Tynecastle, on November 1.

Falkirk will sell tickets to Rangers fans for their August 9 clash via a voucher in the Falkirk Herald, before launching a public sale.

  1. where would the other SPL clubs be without the auld firm?... bankrupt... stop cryin and pay the fee.... if Rangers and Celtic fans stopped goin to their SPL away games... the other clubs are in trouble. it makes sense to charge them a handling fee... coz most of them hike their prices when the auld firm visit anyhow.
the SPL's trouble isn't Rangers or Celtic... its a lack of competition coming from the rest of the so called football teams that hide under their SPL status and veto any chance to change the game in scotland for the better... if they could drag their clubs out of the dark ages and pull their fingers out.. they could create revenue elsewhere.... how many times in the past few years have Scotland had a team outside the SPL qualify for Europe.... too many.... at best the others in the SPL should be lookin for a cup run to get into the EUFA cup.. instead of relyin on the intertoto or the auld firm visitin 3-4 times a year.

  2. Business is business. All the other clubs in the SPL know the biggest crowds of the season are achieved when playing the old firm. Why should Celtic and Rangers have to cover the costs of distributing these tickets.

It is not the old firms problem when the rest of the clubs in the spl are run like second rate businesses and they are quite right to ask for this levy. If you look at any business that does not invest inwardly you end up like Dundee FC and Hearts FC not to mention others.

If teams like Dundee and Dundee Utd had one stadium with shared costs compared to two across the road from each other they would be able to halve their costs. The fans talk about the history but you could easily incorporate a museum in to a state of the art ground. The San Siro is a shining example and there are few bigger clubs than AC and Inter.

Thats the reason Scottish football is so @#$%. People dont want change even though the SPL could be a gold mine.

  3. I agree and I am also a Celtic fan. Surely the OF make enough money without this surcharge, and they do have a responsibility to the other SPL clubs. Making money can be taken too far sometimes and this is one of those cases in question.

  4. I think it is ridiculous that the Old Firm have made this move.

With the amount of fans who live in and around Edinburgh that travel to Glasgow, instead of watching Hibs or Hearts, they should be grateful for all they can get.

Imagine if Hibs or Hearts demanded the same for games at Parkhead or Ibrox?

The Old Firm are bleeding other clubs in the SPL sry as it is, through signing players to warm the reserves bench (Deek Riordan, for one).

It's about time they thought of the other clubs in the SPL and where they would be without them.

    BTW, I'm a Celtic fan :)
