Premier League - Liverpool sign Spanish starlet

Liverpool have completed the signing of Spanish teenager Emmanuel Mendy.

Manager Rafael Benitez (pictured) has followed up on the capture of Andrea Dossena and Philipp Degen with another defensive acquisition by bringing in the 18-year-old right-back from Murcia Deportivo of the Spanish third division.

Mendy arrives for free after signing a three-year contract and will initially be placed within coach Gary Ablett's reserve squad.

The highly-rated full-back can also be deployed on the left side of defence.

Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has expressed his belief that Tottenham striker Robbie Keane would be "a great signing" for the club.

The Republic of Ireland international has been linked with a £20 million move to Anfield, and should he arrive would compete with Kuyt for a place up front alongside Fernando Torres.

Kuyt said: "We all know how well he did for Spurs last season and if he could do the same for us if he came here he would be a great signing.

"When you are at a club like Liverpool you expect the club to be linked with top players and of course you want players like Keane because they can come in and do a good job.

"It would make competition for places even tougher, but that's the way it should be because it brings out the best in you."

  1. i have supported liverpool for 38 years and i might be wrong in saying this but i belive its time we had a british manager in control of liverpool.our cup glory of the 80s was all down to a british manager.i have three boys who play for lincoln city accademy .what is there future in football if we are opening all doors for theses manegers from abroad...however i will always support liverpool fc ,i am a football coach and im coaching young lads from our country!! lets hope by the time they get to an age where they get the chance to play for there country .....come on you reds..........................................

He tries to be as clever as wenger, but his ice cream van doesn't go so far attracting little boys to Anfield and doesn't have fergies dosh, so he buys 50 players between 5 and 156million (Torres aside). It's all papered over buy the jammy CL win and some cups. Listen scousers, DRAWS cost liverpool the title every year and a draw is not a bad result in Europe, hence liverpool do well in CL. Wake up and get a more dynamic and adventurous manager.

  19. Buying 18-year olds or 30-year olds doesn't matter. Benitez is a tactical genius, but when will people realise that players need confidence to give out 100% on the pitch, and that Benitez's rotation system does not breed confidence and consistency? Liverpool's pedigree deserve far more domestic success than what currently obtains, and they should tell Benitez to stop this policy or take the gamble and sack him.
