Premier League - City seal Kompany deal

Eurosport - Sat, 23 Aug 13:40:00 2008

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Vincent Kompany from Hamburg for an undisclosed fee.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Bundesliga Hamburg Kompany - 0

The defender has put pen to paper on a four-year deal and becomes City's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of defender Tal Ben Haim and Brazilian striker Jo.

The 22-year-old moved to Hamburg from Anderlecht in 2006, and has since been regularly linked with a move to England.

Kompany was angered last week after Hamburg recalled him from the Beijing Olympics for their opening Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich. The resulting row is likely to have contributed to his departure, with the Belgian international claiming that Hamburg denied him an Olympic medal.

Belgium reached the semi-finals and will now face Brazil in the bronze medal match on Friday.

The highly-rated defender said at the time: "I am being made to look as if I broke a promise. There was a written agreement between Hamburg and the Belgian FA, but my promise was that we would look at the sporting situation.

"Hamburg have been in the Bundesliga for nearly 50 years and played Bayern nearly 100 times, and they will play Bayern another 100 times, but for Belgium, it was the first time ever at the Olympic Games."

  4. Iam also a Belgian and know that Vincent is going to perform very well for City. Come on guys, Mark Hughes is a very shrewd manager and he would not have agreed to the transfer if the player was not in his plans.
By the way, I live in Ghana and teams should come and see the "potentials" within this part of the world.

  6. Wonder where he will play him, our defence was woeful against Villa, and Dunne has made a few howlers recently, so beefing up the back four or just in front.
Looking forward to (finally) seeing Jo & Benyani up front.

  11. Yes a good signing for Man City. If he continues to progress im sure he will be one of the top central defenders of his generation. He has his work cut out to get in front of Dunne & Richards, but good luck to the lad, I'm really hope he makes it.
