Henman paired up with Jamie Murray to beat Lovro Zovko and Marin Cilic 4-6 6-4 7-6 (3) 7-5 to give Britain an insurmountable 3-0 lead in their playoff tie with Croatia.
The veteran sealed the victory with a forehand winner on match point and had the crowd chanting his name at the finish.
"For me to finish with Britain back in the World Group is perfect," he said courtside after the match.
"They've (the crowd) been phenomenal. Today was an incredible atmosphere.
"It's this type of occasion I'm going to miss in the future and I'm going to miss each and every one of you that supported me throughout my career."
Coach John Lloyd once again paid tribute to Henman after the match, calling him the best British player since Fred Perry, "you couldn't have scripted it any better," added Lloyd after the match.
Henman's partner on the day Jamie Murray said it was a privilege to play a part in Henman's final match.
"It was an absolute honour to be on the court with him and I'm sad to see him go," he said.
"For me, Andy and Jamie Baker, growing up, he was our role model and inspiration."
