Championship - No replay for 'phantom' goal match

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Sep 11:08:00 2008

The Football League have announced that the 2-2 draw between Reading and Watford which featured a 'phantom' goal will not be replayed.

FOOTBALL: Reading manager Steve Coppell - 0

Linesman Nigel Bannister flagged for a goal instead of a corner when the ball crossed the goal-line well wide of the post during a goalmouth scramble from a corner at Vicarage Road.

Referee Stuart Attwell, who became the Premier League's youngest official last month at the age of 25, awarded a goal despite not a single Reading player appealing or celebrating the 'strike', which at the time was accredited to John Eustace as an own goal.

The match finished 2-2, denying Watford all three points.

Andy Williamson, the League's chief opperating officer, said: "The Laws of the Game give no discretion in these matters - the referee's decision regarding whether a goal is scored or not is final and binding. Given this explicit position, the League cannot intervene".

On Monday, Reading boss Steve Coppell (pictured) admitted he was willing to replay the match after reviewing the evidence.

"If the authorities decide a replay is the correct thing to do then I've got no objections whatsoever.

"I'm not sure there's a precedent but if that's what people decide then I am quite happy to do it.

"We don't want to be seen to be taking advantage of anything.

"I have sympathy with Watford and I really don't know what to say to make it right.

"But if the Football League phone me now and say something was definitely wrong I'm happy to go along with it."

The decision has been roundly condemned as the worst decision seen on a football pitch, a view backed up by Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt even though he has retained some sympathy for the officials.

Hunt said: "It was a screamer! No, it was probably the worst decision I have ever witnessed.

"We can't do anything about it. It's not our mistake, but what can you do? You can't say 'no ref, it wasn't in'.

"He seemed all right. He's a young referee. But after this he'll probably be sitting at home next week. I've had him before and he's been all right.

"It was just a bad day at the office. He talks, he respects you and you respect him. I can understand Watford's frustration, but everyone makes mistakes."

  1. Terrible unjust situation, something must be done!

  2. I think that Watford must be allowed three points as that was not a goal and its wrong

  3. The fa are a disgrace and I am not sure if I can take football seriously anymore.
What now, refs have a bet, make up a goal and win money?
Give Watford the points for a win!

  4. this is the F.A all over!! They make the rules up as they go along! Eric Cantona cracked a thug who ran 20 rows to shout insults about his mother. The thug was sentenced got found guilty of threatening behaviour and smashed up the court room! Cantona gets a 9 month ban. Joey Barton the serial thug voley's a fellow team mate in the face and hospitalises him and gets a six game ban. Rio Ferdinand misses a drug test and gets a 9 month ban and a £50,000 fine. Adrian Mutu tested possitive for coke and got a 7 month ban and a £20,000 fine! It's clear that was not a goal so how the hell can they let it stand! What a disgrace! They can wipe out John Terrys red card but they can allow a non goal to stand!! This game should be replayed or the fake goal should be wiped off! shoking events and shocking response from the F.A

  5. consider the scenario a couple of years back when both were in premiership...Imagine this phantom goal put reading into europe and watford relegated to C/Ship?

  6. I trust Reading would also grant free admittance to the 'replay'?

    newtonpm:
The 1999 Arsenal v Sheff Utd cup tie was a perfect opportunity for Arsenal players and Wenger to demonstrate sportsmanship. The captain (not sure if it was Bould or Parlour) could have instructed his players to allow Blades player to score at the other end unopposed. Instead MOTD gushed about Arsenal's sporting gesture by offering a replay. How sporting, another 40,000 Highbury gate - yeah right. Had Arsenal granted free entry to the replay and travel expenses from Sheffield, that might have appeased 5,000 Yorkshiremen.

  7. how are we ever going to respect the referees if the top men in the FA don't even deserve it?

  9. As a Watford fan,i'am staggerd by this decision, but why have a go at Coppell or the Reading players ?? The error was made by the officials, they are there to decide the outcome of such issues.Mistakes are made in every match (not all as obvious as this one granted),goal kicks instead of corners, free kicks etc etc, which could & has led to a goal being scored. If the "goal" had been awarded to Watford,i think our players would have done exactly the same as the Reading players. If it was left to the players to decide every incident then why have any officials ?? imagine the problems that would cause !!

  10. The FA are just like the Government, usless when the truth is put in front of them. The FA should re-write the rules that states, what ever the linesman says goes, so if he says the team that kicked off the first half, can also kick the second half off then thats fine. Where are we going next?? Both oficials should be suspened and I agree with brian b, the states the ball has to cross the line BETWEEN the goal post and the cross bar.

  12. Coppell knows the match will never be replayed I always thought he was a gentleman prior to this but he must have known from his own players reaction that it wasnt a goal. Why would one of his own players kick it back into play if it was going into the net?? Reading had a chance to rectify the situation by letting Watford equalise both immediately afterwards and after half time, they clearly chose not to!! Heard Murty on Radio 5 and he talked a load of rubbish,he wasnt even playing! Perhaps they will let Watford score straight away at Reading, then my faith in Coppell will be restored. As usual the FA have come out with a pathetic do nothing statement washing their hands of everything. Why dont they speak in language people understand. The ref also booked watford players as a result of this and sent Boothroyd to the stands all this should be rescinded.

  13. oh well at least next year we all know the answer the BBCs Question of sport "what happened next" and out of interest if the referees decision is binding how come John Terry was playing yesterday against Man Utd. Thought the ref gave him a RED CARD

  15. what i don't understand why the supposed acting assistant referee didn't find it a little strange it was a "readng " player trying to hook the ball out of the goal or was he colour blind and all the players were wearing the same coloured socks

  16. Coppels no mug he knew by saying he would welcome a reply it was gonna be a non starter. It makes him look good in everyones eyes. The ball went out of play and was kicked back into play.....No goal... correct. So, why is everyone talking about Coppel, the ref and the linesman. A goal was not scored, this being the case then Reading should lose that goal. Final score 1-2 to Watford. sorted. If it never was a goal, then it shouldn't stand. Game over.

  17. The Football League have exposed themselves as 'idiots'.

All this talk about 'explicit position' & 'no discretion' - I think they need to wake up and make the right decision. There is no excuse given the proof they have in front of them.

I hope Watford miss out on promotion by 1 point and sue the FL...maybe not, that won't do any good...

...how about the Reading players actually saying to the ref 'It wasn't in..' they have been caught out on TV as cheats - or why couldnt they have let Watford score immediately from the re-start.

shame on Reading and the FL...

  18. Sorry HarryP, don't think people have missed the point at all. You can't say giving a goal to a side that didn't score, is any different in principal than giving a red card to a player that didn't foul.

On many occasions goals have been given that 'didn't go in', this just happens to be a ridiculously extreme example. I appreciate that i'm the umpteenth person to say this, but it doesn't change the fact that a referee's decision is final.

  19. Ron I watch the other leagues as well and accept that there are fewer mistakes by refs however this could be something to do with the pace of the English game. We play a far more Gung Ho end to end game. More pace more aggression, more room for a refs error.
