Championship - No replay for 'phantom' goal match

Eurosport - Tue, 23 Sep 11:08:00 2008

The Football League have announced that the 2-2 draw between Reading and Watford which featured a 'phantom' goal will not be replayed.

FOOTBALL: Reading manager Steve Coppell - 0

Linesman Nigel Bannister flagged for a goal instead of a corner when the ball crossed the goal-line well wide of the post during a goalmouth scramble from a corner at Vicarage Road.

Referee Stuart Attwell, who became the Premier League's youngest official last month at the age of 25, awarded a goal despite not a single Reading player appealing or celebrating the 'strike', which at the time was accredited to John Eustace as an own goal.

The match finished 2-2, denying Watford all three points.

Andy Williamson, the League's chief opperating officer, said: "The Laws of the Game give no discretion in these matters - the referee's decision regarding whether a goal is scored or not is final and binding. Given this explicit position, the League cannot intervene".

On Monday, Reading boss Steve Coppell (pictured) admitted he was willing to replay the match after reviewing the evidence.

"If the authorities decide a replay is the correct thing to do then I've got no objections whatsoever.

"I'm not sure there's a precedent but if that's what people decide then I am quite happy to do it.

"We don't want to be seen to be taking advantage of anything.

"I have sympathy with Watford and I really don't know what to say to make it right.

"But if the Football League phone me now and say something was definitely wrong I'm happy to go along with it."

The decision has been roundly condemned as the worst decision seen on a football pitch, a view backed up by Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt even though he has retained some sympathy for the officials.

Hunt said: "It was a screamer! No, it was probably the worst decision I have ever witnessed.

"We can't do anything about it. It's not our mistake, but what can you do? You can't say 'no ref, it wasn't in'.

"He seemed all right. He's a young referee. But after this he'll probably be sitting at home next week. I've had him before and he's been all right.

"It was just a bad day at the office. He talks, he respects you and you respect him. I can understand Watford's frustration, but everyone makes mistakes."

  1. "'You can't say 'no ref, it wasn't in'

Erm, yes you can, its called being Sporting. As would allowing your opponent to score a goal straight away, that would also be the sporting thing to do."
    .
Like Robbie Fowler a few years ago against Arsenal, Ref gave a pen, Robbie said it wasn't, ref said pen, Robboe passed it to Seaman.
As Steve said, give them an open goal to score in from the kick off, can't be more sporting than that.....

  3. I think you are all missing the point. gerrard actually scored but it was dissallowed.Sendings off rightly or wrongly actually happen, This goal NEVER actually happened, because the ball did not actually go between the 3 white sticks. So therefore it cannot be described as a goal.

  5. For all you scousers still whinging about the Gerrard 'goal' I'd suggest you find the REAL frozen footages when the ball was actually struck not the MOTD BS. Torres WAS offside AND distracted Sorensen jumping directing inline with the flight of the ball.

As much as you want to whinge the Ref and Linesman were correct.

However Fullers disallowed goal v Everton is completely different story.

  6. Refs must be culpable. Living overseas I get all my football on the box and watch the German, Spanish and Italian football as well as the English Premiership highlights. I can't understand the poor quality and lack of consistency shown by English refs, if you refereed a game in Italy like this the fraud squad would be checking you out and you would have questions to answer, why aren’t referees responsible for their poor decisions that can cost clubs millions in lost revenue, something stinks. Overseas commentators are always bemused and replay over and over all the controversial refereeing decisions that happen weekly in the premiership and imply the ref is on the take. Why can’t a club, a player or a manager criticize bad refereeing and bad decisions? Why does the FA usually support bad refereeing blindly and not right obvious wrongs? Offend a ref and you get a booking, end a players career or sideline him for months and months and you get a booking where's the justice in that?
All refs should be above reproach and reveal their earnings and justify their assets.

  8. What was the ref thinking. To allow a goal that bemused not only the players but the fans, officials from both teams and the Vicarage Road builders, is in the least scandalous. I do think though that the Reading players should of had the decency to either let the opposition score to even things up or atleast the captain speak to his manager and ask what to do in this most bizzare situation. The game will not be replayed and Coppell knows that so his gesture is empty. When is the FA and FIFA going to wake up and allow video replays in football. The amount of time it took the ref to get the players back playing after the incident would have been 5 times decreased if he could of had the 4th official telling him the true situation via a replay. Its fair to say that both the lino and ref made a huge mistake that will go down in history. Sorry Aidy, I ahve read your comments and to say that you have sympathy with officials is ridiculous. Stand up for your club and the issues that go against it. It so sounds like you have given up the ghost with the officials just like you have with the board and its running of the club.

  11. Whereas in most cases when "goals" are disputed (e.g.SG's for Liverpool on Saturday)there are pros and cons, there are none in this case - the ball quite simply did not enter the net. Isn't it an FA RULE that a goal can only be scored when the ball enters the net? In this case everybody, including the opposing team, is in common agreement i.e. that a clear injustice occurred.
The FA have the right to deduct points from teams in certain circumstances why not award 2 bonus points in this case if both teams are in agreement? Replaying the match might compound the injustice if Watford lost and I agree that such a replay would create a difficult precedent.
The ref. made the right decision initially having a clear sight of proceedings - his mistake was to let himself be overruled by his assistant. Since there is universal agreement in this case the clear injustice should be corrected. From Brian B

  12. newtonpm, the fourth should have been disallowed too as there were people on the pitch. A one goal 'Hat-Trick'. Impressive

  13. Refs make mistakes just like everyone else does. It's about time Blatter and FIFA do something about goal line technology. If they have been able to do it in Rugby League for a decade then why can't they do it here.

UEFA and FIFA should stop going on about foreign players and other useless things and pull their fingers out of their butts for the good of the game.

There is one precedent and that was Arsenals FA Cup match against Sheffield. Not sure if it was Wednesday or United when they scored from by mistake after an injury happened and a player didn't understand about giving the ball back.

From Nicholas, on Mon 22 Sep 3:41PM
  14. There has been a precedent for this (of sorts). In 1999, Arsenal played Sheffield United in the FA Cup. A Sheff U player was injured and Arsenal kicked the ball out of play to allow him to get treatment. Kanu, making his debut for Arsenal, took delivery of a throw in and rather than kick the ball back to the Sheffield United goalie, played on and set-up the winning goal!! To be fair to Kanu, he didn't realise, after having played in Italy, that this was the sporting thing to do. Arsene Wenger offered to replay the game and the offer was accepted. Arsenal still won anyway!
I agree with what people are saying, though. You can't ask for a replay when you get a bad decision, as all games will be forever replayed!! What we need is a rule which allows video evidence to eradicate these shocking decisions! Oh, and this is to alagerdrinker - England won 4-2, getting the fourth goal after the "dodgy" third one, so the score would have been 3-2 anyway!!

  15. For all those sad scousers who dont know the rules.... Torres was in an offside position and obstructing the keeper, therefore he was in play even if he didnt head the ball... so stop blaming everyone else for your inability to beat Stoke... is this why everyone calls you "professional victims"?

  17. I think England should replay Germany for the 1966 World Cup, that had a dodgy 'goal' too

From beavisthegreat, on Mon 22 Sep 3:06PM
  18. I agree with what patrick.kiely said. If a precedent is set by this game of a replay being played when the refs get a decision wrong then there will be replays every week. I mean whats to stop Liverpool asking for a replay against Stoke?as the ref and the linesman got the decision there wrong too!

From Jael Cassano, on Mon 22 Sep 3:04PM
  19. Rediculous idea replaying it.
Lots of games are affected by bad decisions, lots of goals have been given that weren't and lots haven't been given that were goals.
What you gonna do replay them all.
Its just tough luck I'm afarid

From ashley, on Mon 22 Sep 2:52PM
  20. I dont understand why Hunt says you cant say "no ref it wasnt in"?

You can and you should have. This winning at all costs is very wrong and unsporting.
