Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he does not have "a rational answer" as to why the Abu Dhabi United Group have taken over Premier League club Manchester City in a multi-million pound deal.
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan will formally become the new owner of the club on Tuesday.
The arrival of the Middle Eastern billionaire makes them the richest club in the league - taking the mantle held by Chelsea for the last five years - and also looks like changing the balance of spending power within the Premier League.
Wenger, though, said he found it a mystery why they bought the club which has not won a major title since lifting the League Cup in 1976. They were last champions of England 40 years ago.
In an interview in the October issue of the official Arsenal magazine, Wenger says: "I don't know why these people are in there.
"It doesn't look like they are there to make any money. So if they are not there to make money out of it, then are they buying it out of love?
"Well, I am not sure these people are supporters of Manchester City from a young age.
"So then comes a further question: Why are they doing it? Why have they bought the club? I can't really find a rational answer.
"If it is just a toy for them then it is even more dangerous.
"You can have 20 billionaires in the Premier League, still only one can win it and one will come last.
"The problem is that when these people who have bought into football get tired of it, what will they leave behind? That is the real question you can ask.
"If their investment is purely strategic, based on the market interest, then they could easily decide one day that it is not strategic to be in that market any more, and then they will leave."
Manchester City have made a promising start to the new season and thumped Portsmouth 6-0 on Sunday to take fifth place in the table.
Arsenal lead the standings and Wenger, who has built a number of successful teams at the club over the last 12 years said it was not easy to buy success.
"My thoughts are that it is good to have money in football, but it's how you use it. Basically you still have to respect the rules," Wenger said.
"You can't have a situation where people just come in and say they want to buy Cristiano Ronaldo or they want to buy Fernando Torres. That is disrespectful. These players are under contract."
City signed Brazilian forward Robinho for around £32.5 million at the start of September shortly after the Abu Dhabi investment company signed a memorandum of agreement about the takeover.

prem league whores
mcfc41, you have to have a sense to read meanings into one's comments. The cardinal point about Wenger's comments is not who buys what club; it is, "will ADUG stay will Mancity for life, or they will later sell the club to another prospective buyer" just like Shinawatra did. You don't buy success. Man City will take some time before they win any major title to give back ADUG a return on their heavy investment. So will they endure and keep investing so that time? Or do you mcfc41 thinks Man City will just spend their money and win something this season or the other one or next. They can't in the next 2-3 seasons. It will be difficult even in the fourth season. The question is "will ADUG 'longsuffer' till then before they get something out" This is exactly what Wenger is driving at. And not what you think mcfc41.
I DO UNDERSTAND MR.WENGER'S POINT.CITY IS TAKING THE SPOTLIGHT AND WENGER,NOT BEING USED TO SELLING HIS BEST PLAYERS TO ENGLISH CLUBS IS CORNERED THAT ONE IS NOW THE RICHEST AND CAN AFFORD ANY PLAYER----HOW ABOUT ADEBAYOR GOING TO CITY IN JANUARY?.
HE CAN NOT HIDE IS ENVY AND FEAR AND THAT IS WHY HE IS INCOHESIVE IN HIS POINTS;
WHAT IS WRONG IF A MAN BECOMES A DIRECTOR IN A COMPANY AFTER 40YEARS.
AFTER 40YEARS IS IT ABNORMAL TO TAKE A RISE?
MUST ONE AS RICH AS SHIEKH MANSOURI NEED THE OPINION OF AN ENEMY OF PROGRESS LIKE WENGER ON HOW TO SPEND HIS MONEY?
WHAT WAS THE NOISE WHEN ABRAMOIL TOOKOVER CHEQUE SEA?MR.WENGER SHOULD MIND HIS BUSINESS IN ARSENAL WHERE HE MAKES HIS MONEY IN BUYING AND SELLING.
IN MY THE SHIEKH IS BUYING FOR PASSION AND A NEW CHALLENGE.HE WILL BE MORE CONTENTED IF OUT OF NOTHING, CITY GETS SOME TROPHIES.IF IT WERE FOR MONEY QUICK LAURELS,HE WOULD HAV'D BOUGHT OVER ARSENAL OR LIVERPOOL.
wenger is right what is going to happen to these clubs when owners find new plaything. do you want them to go down like Leeds chasing trophies?
why would anyone who loves the game hate arsenal.. except for people like you morrissey_fintan..take it as a game..most of us respect wenger and the club for their style of play and ethics.. so forget about that.. we all love the game.. and about arsenal being on top of the league.. i mean now.. just wait..this is only early stages of the season..the whole season is still left..so hold on.. and for calling the rest of the clubs useless.then why didnt u guys win last season? huh?so please dont tell something that will make you eat your words later.. and as you have said..you are the best "at the moment".. so you yourself aint sure that you guys are the best..duh...
nwez hoping to njoi this season.. and to get to see some good football..
luv peace
Hi folks ,I think Mr Wenger is trying to justify his stinginess at Arsenal fc.His youth policy is fine if the club has no money to spare ,and His genious will carry them through tough times. But lets face facts here,Arsenal is becoming a nursery to the richer clubs now,Mr wenger will never have a Great team while the board is allowed to exploit his marvelous discoveries.and sell on his top players.
look at present all u anti arsenal.we r top looking down on the rest of u useless football teams.we r the best in england at the moment so ye all can shut up ye muppets!!
no disrespect to wenger or arsenal.. they have won many trophies.. always have been in title contention..as i have said before..i am a die hard manu fan..but arsenal has and had some of the best players i have seen..henry..Dennis Bergkamp.. veira..pires.. fabergas.. adebayor.. and there game play is awesome..fast..controled.. but the only point i am making is that wenger need not poke his nose into unwanted territory..
wot the hell ru talking about 93?ur talking thru ur arse
I grew up to understand football as a game of passion, commitment & absolute dedication; the standard which i believe Arsene Wenger & ARSENAL still nurtures till date. I am a typical CHELSEA man who also believes in the ethics standard of the round leather game. Obviously, i think everyone would now understand why ALEX FERGUSON fought with all tooth & nail to keep the magical CHRISTIANO. I think everyone logically have seen the injury REAL MADRID would have inflicted on Manchester United & ALEX to say the least by luring a player with substantial & enoumous contract with a money that should be meant to improve the standard of the game for a player. Chelsea management must have leanrt a lesson or two from the flopped AC MILAN striker by refusing to bait the hook on ROBINHO at the eleventh hour. Isn't the time for all parties concerned to listen to voice of intellects in the game like "Prof" Arsene Wenger for the ethics, rules and principles of the game to be respected? MOSES(LONDON)
We can and will easily be bigger than Arsenal thats why, why do people take him so seriously this is the man who sold Henry bad move
What's this about arsenal winning nothing. Four seasons ago ? The only thing they haven't won is champions league. And anyone who posts a comment on the english being spoken, this is about football, not grammar.
aren't the big four also getting loads of money from the americans, russians and other places.. they are not complaining..are they.. how else can they afford the likes of c ron..torres etc.. i like them all..but the question but why they are buying...and man city.. cause they can build up a team from scratch with less egos to handle.. they cna plan in a better way i guess cause they are less demanding than the big four.. spend the bucks in the right areas and they can surely put up a challenge for any team.. and about buying players.. tel me how many english players are there in the arsenal first team.. 1.. theo wallcot..thatz it.. rest all are forgeiners..does wenger have a probelm with that? but manu, chel and liv..atleast they have a whole lot more players from england..
actualy what does it matter who owns the club as long as it is for the interest for the club and the game.. and i think the owners have a good sporting background and money aint any reason why they would buy mancity..the guyz family is worth trillians.. who needs money then?
hey guys.. just have a background check on this guy who is taking over man city.. then u will know the reason..
"Sheikh Mansour has a deep love of sport – he is chairman of Al Jazeera Football Club and chairman of the Emirates Horse Racing Authority. He is a key political figure and is a member of the UAE Federal Cabinet and Minister of Presidential Affairs. In business, he is chairman of First Gulf Bank and chairman of the International Petroleum Investment Company.
The brother of the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the biggest of the United Arab Emirates, he has an estimated family fortune of about $1trillion (£555billion) to buy foreign assets alone.
" quoted from the telegrapgh
"Sheikh Mansour is an accomplished horse rider and has won a number of Endurance Racing tournaments held in the Middle East" quoted from wikipedia
so money aint the issue and religion is also not.. he is a sportsman by nature and he is already the chairman of another local football club..so football is already is in him.. the other reason is buisness..he is an intelligent man i guess..and bloody rich.. so let wait and see what is to happen..hope for the best..
mr wenger should keep is nose out of outher peoples affairs, whats it got to do with him who buys a football club,i think he is just a bit tad enviuos
The premiership is becoming a place of business rather than place of football. This is a dangerous thing to players and supporters of football.
Long term effects can now be seen, the likes of lesser clubs being snapped up. Would have Robihno joined Man City for any other reason? I have followed him throughout his playing career and I can honestly say he is one of the BEST players in world football. Football clubs around the country and beyond risk these wealthy buyers ruining the game for one reason - results are attained by money and not hard work like youth training, etc.
I suppose the ball had started rolling years ago and that today and in the future we can expect nearly all premiership clubs being taken over by businessmen. Very sad.
Hence the only way we as fans of FOOTBALL (not the ones that smiling with glee when winning at all financial costs) can hope for is a ruling from the Footballing bodies. When the FA (in this country), UEFA and FIFA make a ruling that there can only be 4-5 foreign players in the team or squad - this make wealthy business think that they are not totally in control. At the moment there is too much control in the hands of businessmen and as a result you get GOOD managers out of work, like Keegan, Curbishley to name a few.
i think arsen's got a point,about WHY
I sort of agree with Wenger. What will happen is that the Man City squad will get sold and they will buy a team of stars and overpaid children. If i was there now, i would be worried about my job.
Mr Wenger is speaking very good sense, as usual. John T; "Wenger what have you won in the last 6 years, nothing". Eh? The Premiership and FA Cup Double in 2002, the FA Cup in 2003, the Premiership (unbeaten) in 2004 and the FA Cup in 2005. Alright matey? Doh!
