Spain's Alberto Contador became the fifth cyclist to win all three major Tours after he added the Vuelta to his previous triumphs in the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia.
The 25-year-old Astana captain finished safely in the peloton as Denmark's Matti Breschel of the CSC Saxo Bank team won the final bunch sprint after eight laps of the Spanish capital.
Contador joins Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault, the Italian Felice Gimondi and the Belgian Eddy Merckx as victor of each of the three-week races of the calendar.
The 14 months in which Contador completed his 'grand slam' betters Hinault's previous record of 26 months and underlines the Spaniard's credentials as the rider of his generation.
With his best years to come, it remains to be seen if Contador becomes one the sport's all-time greats.
Having missed the opportunity to defend his crown in this year's Tour de France following Astana's exclusion from the race, Contador won the Giro in May after his team's 11th-hour invitation, before setting his sights on glory in his home country.
Contador rode into the leader's gold jersey atop the Alto de l'Angliru in stage 13 before stretching his lead the next day with another imperious display of mountain riding on the ascent to Fuentes de Invierno.
Holding a 1:17 lead over American team-mate Levi Leipheimer going into Saturday's uphill time trial, Contador limited his losses to 31 seconds to all but secure the overall win.
Crossing the finish line in Madrid with his arms raised and a symbolic three fingers proffered to the sky, Contador finished the 21-stage race with a 1:01 lead over Leipheimer.
Compatriot Carlos Sastre, the reigning Tour de France champion, took the final spot on the podium 4:31 off the pace.
Belgian Greg van Avermaet (Silence-Lotto) won the sprinter's jersey while France's Davide Moncoutie of Cofidis was crowned king of the mountains.
Breschel won the final bunch sprint after a couple of high-speed crashes on the final loop in Madrid broke the momentum of the peloton.
The Dane finished a bike's length ahead of Alexandre Usov (Ag2R) to record his first career win in the Vuelta while Davide Vigano of QuickStep took third.

Armstrong trained for one race.. The race most people think is the most prestigious, and certainly where the sponsorship money is here in the US. I think he never raced the Giro for one reason, because it could jeopardize his chances of being 100% come July. He never raced the Vuelta to win it because nobody here cares, and that's not good for his ego when he could be dating rock stars and movie starlets.
So there is no way in my book that you can rank him as the "greatest" ever.. Especially since he himself has said that was Mercx. I also hope Contador breaks his legs off in the Alps next year.
I think the Contador is the only man who could win all three grand tour's in one year, it's be a privilege and honor to watch him on Giro (propably to best race in last 15 years). After Vuelta you can see how he wos not prepared on Giro like a difrent man
Bravo Contador you're the best
Lance Armstrong aint up there, unless of course you mean his own donkass.
Well, some people says Amstrong is the best ever. I dont think so. Amstrong only participed in Tour of France every year. Indurain, for example, won Tour and Giro two consecutive years. And Amstrong only won when Indurain retired.
Contandor is great. But only time will tell about he is the best ever.
Sorry for my English.
Contador has the potential to be up there with LA. Perhaps even greater - only time will tell as its still early in his career. LA would never have competed in 3 grand tours in 14 months thats for sure.
Thererealchegevara!
Contador is better than Lance in your book? It doesnt look like much of a book, dont make an @#$% out of youself. People may not say things but they will laugh at you. Mercx is the only person on this planet that can be compared to Lance. I like Contador, I hope he does well in the future. He will go down in history as a great cyclist like Paulo Bettini, Mario Cipollini, Greg Lemond etc. But he cant even be compared to Marco Pantini, Uno, Induriean ( sorry about the spelling) right now let alone Lance Armstrong. We are all happy for Contrador but lets not get carried away.
After this season's success? Astana is not going to fold!!! Astana will be in 2009 Tour. Prudomme has stated as much. What's going to happen with Lance? None of us know. A huge congratulations to Alberto Contador. The man has proven he is a true champion. I look forward to watching him for many years to come.
r astana folding then CI M, well done conti keep it up
Contador is the best. Better than Armstrong in my book, no question. Let's see how his career goes.
Well done Contador - A good proper cyclist who doesn't just stick to one race a year (Ring any bells LA Fans??)
Can't see a certain LA ever having had the bottle to do more than 1 race a year
congrats to Contador, I was hanging out around the Astana Tour bus after the finish. when I directly asked Johann Bruyneel about Lance and next year there was the obligatory no comment. what was interesting though was a conversation between Johann & Pat Mcquaid of the UCI. it would appear that there are some negoiations going on between ASO & UCI for next year to resolve the impass and also maybe deal with Astana issue as well. but more interesting is the announcement that Lance will make in NY on tuesday night ata dinner where he & Michael Bloomberg will be in attendance about the LAF ( Lance Armstrong Foundation) I may be wrong but I think that the LAF will have the cycling team that Lance will ride in next year. I am speculating that this may be the team formally known as astana which is in effect the team formally known as discovery. therefore Lance is again paired with Johann and Trek bikes. - the holy trinity one may say? well we await Wednesday morning and see what transpires ;) livestrong Alberto and enjoy the Party tonight
