World number two Jelena Jankovic has said she feels no extra pressure due to her lack of a Grand Slam trophy, as the chase for the top spot in the women's game continues at the China Open.
Jankovic and fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic top the draw. New world number three Dinara Safina, who captured the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, withdrew due to injury.
The women's top ranking has been in flux since Justine Henin's surprise retirement in May, passing between Maria Sharapova, Ivanovic, Jankovic and current number one Serena Williams.
"I don't have to prove to anybody or any media about my ability, except to myself. I am only 23 years old, still young, and I have entered Grand Slam finals," Jankovic said at the China Open.
The US Open finalist, who briefly reached the number one ranking in August, said it was good to see change at the top of the women's game.
"All players are outstanding on court, and I will try my best to finish my job, to play tennis," said Jankovic, who lost in last year's final here to Hungary's Agnes Szavay.
Meanwhile, French Open winner and former world number one Ivanovic said injury had hampered her game over the past few months.
"I couldn't even hold my racket. I think every player needs to face injury in their career," said Ivanovic, who suffered a shock second round defeat at the US Open and has now slipped to number four in the world.
"What I need to do is keep a positive attitude. I need to give myself time to get back."
Russia's Olympic silver medallist Safina pulled out of the China Open due to a low back injury.

when masha returns all theese statements will fall in water 'cause she's the best tennis player and other tennis palyers know that, just the question is where Jankovic will have pain or what will be ivanovic's excuse for the losts, anyway she's loosing in 3 round last 4 months so...
Goooo Maria you're the best!!!
Very sound analyses from Budimir and Latinguy. To be honest I think the fluctuation is quite interesting and should attract more followers to the sport. It seems that Safina is destined for the top as well...she is the most dedicated of the lot and, although Venus or Serena can turn up at the moment and beat her, I think the scales will soon tip in her favour because she is much younger and hard-working than them.
The current problem with WTA Tennis is that since Justine Henin's surprising retirement, no one else has seemed able to have the consistency and commitment and determination to keep winning matches and tournaments all through the year - which is what being Number One is all about.
Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Serena Williams and Venus Williams are all great players and able to dominate at times, but I don't think any of them has displayed the consistency to keep winning week after week, and tournament after tournament.
Jelena Jankovic is the opposite. She plays far too much tennis. She is usually quite consistent and can beat most of the big names on occasions, but she seems to lack the firepower to do so on a regular basis.
Maria looked unstoppable at the Australian Open at the start of the year, but her game went rapidly downhill afterwards, and stalled completely after she again showed her inability to win on clay.
Ana looked formidable at the French, and then a poor performance at Wimbledon seemed to start her own decline.
Venus - as usual - was the Wimbledon Queen - but she can't seem to win on surfaces other than grass - which is a big problem for a potential Number One.
And finally we have Serena, a nine-time slam winner, who was really strong at this year's US Open, but can she maintain it? She was dominant in the past from 2002 - 03 when the women's game was not nearly as strong, but can she rise again to be a consistent slam and tournament winner and be a true Number One? Serena has always believed that she's a true Number One and told everyone just that - but talk is cheap. You have to prove it to everyone relentlessly, on a day-to-day basis, by winning and winning and winning on all surfaces, including Clay, where she has never been particularly strong.
Finally, Dinara Safina is improving all the time and becoming very consistent on all surfaces. She has enough power to subdue anyone, but needs to learn when and how to use it.
well i dont think the WTA is on the melt down as most of you would put it.. what we need to understand is in every sport there is a certain age where each player has to reach at that stage they are prone to injuries, i.e golf Woods has been out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, football michael Owen was also out for almost the whole season due to injury, John Terry etc...... this is the time for upcoming stars or champs if you like, to shine and take advantage of the situation hence stabilizing their career, it seems these girls are failing to fully utilize and seize the opportunity. they are just scrambling for points here and there which is pathetic if you ask me. true sports heroes are consistent in what they do all round. some keep talking about how young they are " am only 23 yrs old". ranking is not a priority and age is just a number and their job is to win tournaments. All the best to all of them and God bless.
dear mariasharapova is first === less tournaments to gain MORE points
Cant wait 4 sharpapova to return. Hope shes gonn a tear this field apart. x
Im a Serena fan but whilst Justine was in the tour was when the most excitement was. Jankovic need not worry about not having won a grand slam coz she is still so young and she will win it, she is on the right track.
Yes, I totaly agree with you budimirbojan! Now is womens tennis more interesting. Every week someone fights for no.1 spot and its interesting to see what is going to happend with no.1 . Justin was world class player, no doubt, but when she left women tennis started to be very entertaining and unpredictible...
Well, to be honest, it's a bit boring to watch one player taking every tournament she plays on and being no.1 for 200 weeks in a row.. The quality of the women's tennis is on a high level and that's what's the most important. At this moment I think that Dinara and Serena are top 2 players, along with Dementieva and Ivanovic (at Australian Open and Roland Garros form). Jelena is somewhere between.
And I like this statement. She has a good and strong character!
