Third-division VfL Osnabrueck knocked Bundesliga leaders Hamburg SV out of the German Cup on penalties, while champions VfL Wolfsburg fell to Cologne.

Hamburg hit back from two goals down to force extra-time with a last-gasp Piotr Trochowski penalty but they were unable to take advantage of that lifeline.

Both teams scored again in the added half-four before Hamburg wasted the first and last penalties in the shoot-out.

Wolfsburg, who pipped Bayern Munich to the title last season, went out after Cologne beat them 3-2 in an equally entertaining all-Bundesliga tussle in the second round.

Cologne took a 2-0 lead with two goals from Nigerian striker Manasseh Ishiaku before Edin Dzeko narrowed the gap.

Sebastian Freis (pictrued) rounded keeper Diego Benaglio to restore the two-goal cushion in the 65th minute and although Wolfsburg hit back almost immediately through Sascha Riether they could not find an equaliser.

Wolfsburg finished the match with 10 men, with Marcel Schaefer sent off at the end for dissent, while coach Armin Veh was sent to the stands after repeatedly stepping on to the pitch.

Hertha Berlin's poor form continued when the bottom-placed Bundesliga club were knocked out by second-division 1860 Munich on penalties.

Holders Werder Bremen edged past St Pauli 2-1.

Bayern Munich booked their place in the third round with a 5-0 win over Rot-Weiss Oberhausen on Tuesday.
