Giles Scott said he remains committed to sailing's Finn class despite his big-name domestic rivals.
Scott may be a world junior champion and one of his sport's brightest rising stars, but he is still in the choppy wake of his British team-mates.
Britain will only have one entrant in the competitive class at London 2012 and Scott must overcome three-times Olympic champion Ben Ainslie and newly-crowned overall ISAF World Cup champion Ed Wright.
"I have tough competition in the Finn class but it doesn't bother me," he said. "If you want to be the best you have to beat the best.
"Even though the other classes might not have as much competition for a spot at the Olympics, I wouldn't want to race in any other boat.
"I don't think I was ever star-struck around Ben Ainslie: when I first started sailing with him I forced myself to forget who he was.
"Now he is just another competitor and he is definitely beatable."
Scott finished sixth at the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta in Weymouth and acknowledges more improvement is needed despite some stellar results in his first season of full-time sailing.
Those include a victory at the ISAF World Cup in Majorca.
"It has been a hectic year - it is my first year sailing full-time - so I am looking forward to a couple of weeks off to catch up with friends and visit my parents in Scotland," he added.
"I will be getting back into training pretty hard over the winter and I have got a lot to work on.
"Next season will be a big year for me and I want to be consistently in the top three at the major events."
