Superbike Sunday: What a prospect!

We've got a double dose of Superbikes for you this weekend, with the world series from Imola and the domestic boys fighting it out at Silverstone.

Alongside them will be the usual mix of support races, including the world and domestic Supersport championships which are also hardly lacking on the excitement front.

In World Superbikes it’s all about Max Biaggi and his run to the title.

Can Leon Haslam do anything to stop the Roman standing on top of the podium this year? Recent form would suggest not - Leon’s campaign, which started so brightly, seemed to lose its way as it wore on.

But now we’re at that great point of a championship season where we’ve got a host of riders all going out there to win rather than worrying too much about the title race.

I’m talking about the likes of Jonathan Rea, Cal Crutchlow, James Toseland and the rest, who all have very different reasons for wanting to go well at Imola and in the final meeting of the year at Magny-Cours.

In the World Supersport championship it’s all about Eugene Laverty and Kenan Sofuoglu for the title. After Gino Rea was penalised after the last race the points advantage over the past couple of rounds has edged towards the Turk.

Something tells me Eugene will come through to take it... maybe it’s just a bit of tubthumping, but I don’t see this championship anywhere near as cleanly cut as the WSB chase.

Then we’re into the British races and the continuing title Showdown for the Superbike crown.

Tommy Hill is clearly riding on a high, Michael Laverty equally so after Croft but for this weekend we can expect to see a resurgent Josh Brookes and Riyuichi Kiyonari.

The pair didn’t really show up at Croft - but at Silverstone they are racing at a track where they were out in anger earlier this year during wildcard rides in the WSB round.

So Brookes and Kiyo have the set-up info for the track already, both are miffed at what happened at Croft and both know that this weekend’s pair of races have to be theirs or the title is effectively lost.

In British Supersport the excellent Sam Lowes is on course to win the title and – like the HM Plant Honda duo – has a host of set-up info after his wildcard outing during the world round.

The 20-year-old could be crowned this weekend while others continue to put it all on the line for every available point out there.

If it does happen then it will mark the start of a journey for Sam which I am absolutely sure will lead to a world championship in the future.

We’ll be live for nine hours of non-stop action across all the action on Sunday from 9.30 in the morning. See you there...
