The 26-year-old Brazilian, not to be confused with the Bayern Munich midfielder of the same name, claims the Gelsenkirchen side are keen to take him to the Veltins-Arena and that a deal is likely to be struck in January.
"I am in talks with Schalke together with my agent and I think that the negotiations are going well," he said.
"I have been at Botafogo for a long time so I think now is the moment to make the move to another team. I want it to be Schalke 04 as they are interested in me," he added.
"I know that [the Bundesliga] is a league that has grown up very much. Schalke are a big team so I want to reach to an agreement with them."
Yet to represent his country, Ze Roberto nevertheless has aspirations of winning an international cap someday, and he believes a move to Europe will help him achieve that goal.
"All the players in European leagues are much more likely to be considered by the coach of the national team [Dunga]," he said.
"Personally I think that it would be a very good challenge for my career to have the chance to play in the Bundesliga so if something is arranged I will not have any problem in travelling at once to Germany."
