Championship - Boro delay manager appointment

Eurosport - Fri, 23 Oct 12:06:00 2009

Championship side Middlesbrough are not expected to make an announcement about their new manager until Monday.

Gordon Strachan, Celtic manager - 0

The Teessiders had been widely expected to confirm Gareth Southgate's replacement on Friday, with Gordon Strachan odds-on favourite for the post.

Bookmakers have stopped taking bets on the Scot, who is reported in the media to be lining up his former number two at Celtic Garry Pendry and one of his coaches at Parkhead Neil Lennon as his backroom team.

However there will be no such announcement for at least the next 48 hours.

Boro parted company with Southgate following Tuesday's 2-0 home win over Derby, which put the club within a point of West Brom in top spot.

  1. I hope this will, once and for all, explode the myth that Chairman Gibson is some kind of Super Chairman! Regardless of the fact that Southgate should've been sacked last May, this is dreadfully distasteful conduct. For his part in this conspiracy, i do hope the wee man falls flat on his face here - besides, what has he ever done, and PLEASE do not quote ANYTHING from that Mickey Mouse league north of the border!!!!

  2. The club need a change in the boardroom as well the need to get rid of Keith Lamb, we are going to loose Johnson in january because the chief exec failed to give him the long term contract he was asking for whilst Downing was still at the club, but now downing has gone its too late because if you dont make a player feel wanted he will leave. This is another blunder by Lamb, like when we got docked 3 points years ago for not putting a team out against Blackburn which resulted in us being relegated and all our players like Juninho,Emerson & Raveneli leaving the club , where would we have been now if we never got docked 3 points?

  3. Toon reserves could beat Rangers. 50,000 at ibrox a queue around the block to buy them? the toon have 53,000 just relegated still get the money off premiership two more years and Fat Ash cant give the club away. The Real world is in the premiership and championship, Rangers and Celtic week in week out with the English teams would be mediocre at best @#$% at worst. You wont be playing against part time co-op workers gas fitters and fireman down here. All battle hardened pro players just like the toon reserves.

  5. I hate lot's of teams, but at the end of it all it's only a game, not the be all and end all. So lets give whoever takes over as manager a fair crack of the whip, and whats Rangers and Celtic got to do with it,come on Clachna pudding.

  8. Tom Tom Tom

give us a break the reason the old firm is struggling is because the directors are not investing money into the 2 teams but believe me you are kidding yourself on that any team from the N East would give them a doing
I doubt even Sunderland would manage that
The money the mediocre teams get from the premier league is awesome compared with the Money thats around in Scotland

But with Rangers being up for sale if and its a big if they were in the English premier
you would have a queue a mile long to buy them

    50000 AT EVERY HOME GAME

Celtic 60000 AT EVERY HOME GAME

AND BOTH with a world wide fan base

I guess when the bubble bursts in England and it will soon
Sky will determine whether we get in or not

But m/bro or Newcastle beating Either of the old firm still doubt it

speaking as someone who loathes m'boro. i can't believe Southgate got that job in the first place, it was bound to end in failure. Not that i was complaining, boro are now in a league where they belong and hope they stay there.
As for Strachan going there, it would be the best manager appointment boro have made since jack charlton. Strachan knows his stuff. He got a @#$% deal from Celtic cos that club are idiots, they don't know how lucky they were. Strachan has done well at a load of @#$% clubs and i'm sure he'll make improvements at boro if he was to go there. Persoanlly i think he should aim higher, he's too good for them.
Winning trophies every year doesnt make a good manager. Doing well on limited resources does. Teams like man utd and chelsea can run themselves cos they have all the top players and money to get more. Malcolm you really are numb nuts and know very little about the sport, probably why you support a nothing club like boro.

  10. duncan duncan duncan. bless. Accept it Celtic and Rangers are very much bottom half of the prem league or good championship contenders, the problem being they are getting worse and worse by the day. Blame Scottish football in general for that. MidsB, Newcastle would hump Celtic and Rangers right now. And unless Scottish football does something drastic they are only gonna get worse and sucked into the anonimity of the Scottish league

you support a two bob team that has had relegation written all over it for yrs(and you got it last season)

i'm a Rangers fan and they are pretty @#$% at the moment but would still destroy your team

As per the park league we have no choice but to play in it

however if Celtic or Rangers were ever aloud into the English league system it would be delightful to see m/bro against the park league teams????(if you get back to the real big time that is)

Wee Strachan has forgotten more than Sothgate WILL EVER KNOW

As another post says Strachan has learned lots from Sir Alex
    its a pitty Southgate never??
then you may still be in the PREMIER

  13. As I've suggested in free-online verse, club football should be REGULATED back to the way it was - mostly-locals in MEANINGFUL competition.

  15. 3 - Malcolm, just in case you didn't already know... The wee man has played under Alex Ferguson, both at Aberdeen (when they won the European Cup Winner's Cup), and at Man U. Now, I don't know about you, but I happen to think a lot of Fergie has rubbed off on Strachan, both good AND bad!!

  18. Simple,

Gibbo did not need the sidekicks, deal off.

    Him alone or nothing doin.
Keegan now lined up and probably always was to throw the bookies off.
First choice was always going to be a problem.

Martin O never came because the sidekicks were not wanted.either, so he backed off.
