US Open champion Kim Clijsters suffered a midnight defeat in Luxembourg when Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder won their second round clash 6-4 3-6 7-6(6).
Clijsters, the second seed, was bidding for a sixth title in this event, and second tournament victory since her return from two years of retirement.
Schnyder, the world number 47, had beaten Clijsters just twice in their eight prior meetings, and one of those was because of an injury retirement.
But she battled for almost two hours, recovering from a lost 5-3 lead in the third set and then regrouping after letting go a 4-0 lead in the tie-break.
"Patty played extremely smart. It's tough to force errors on her and break through her game," said Clijsters.
"I made more unforced errors and my first serve wasn't working the way I would have liked it to. I had my chances in the first set and I tried to fight through. It's disappointing when you're not playing your best."
Schnyder goes on to face German sixth seed Sabine Lisicki in the quarter-finals.

no real surprise Clijster suffered her first 2nd defeat since turning back bit them can't keep the tempo as she is not playing serena williams
where are the drove of williams haters?? of course this is no news for them, they only emerge from their caves when serena is beaten, lol
Congrats Patty we are all supoortng you, went to Roland garros to see you it was great. we know you are this talented palyer, good luck!
it's like a flashback in time... two of Europe's most delightful players squaring off to a 3rd set tiebreak. does it get any better than that?
yes, you guys are right. and i do support Kim to play only 16 tournaments, as she informed us. she is the first tennis athlete, man or woman, who played more than 100 matches, back in 2003, and mostly injured in 2004.
Go Kim, alle beste ... looking forward to WTA 2010 Calender....
Not really suprised by this I think were only going to see the real Kim come out for grand slams not sure how much she trained since us open win but too bad she cannot play in doha.
Hopefully everyone can be fit for Australian Open and with belguim girls, william sisters and russians the best lady really will win the tournament. There will be no hiding places come quarter finals or earlier if someone is drawn against Henin
nice to hear a true athelete like Kim. she is modest and her good perspective
Clijsters is only human, too. After US Open, we always expect her to win, but she is still coming back and she can do even more in the future. I expect her to more good matches and more Gran Slams to win. It will be a competition between Kim, Serena, Venus (Wimbledon), Maria, Justine and maybe some surprises-some of players of the new generation. I can't wait for 2010 to begin!!!
