Hatton retains belt with stoppage

Eurosport - Sun, 23 Nov 21:02:00 2008

Briton Ricky Hatton retained his IBO light-welterweight title with an 11th round stoppage of American Paulie Malignaggi.

Referee Kenny Bayless halted the contest 28 seconds into the round when Malignaggi's trainer Buddy McGirt waved the towel in the corner. There were no knockdowns but Hatton (45-1, 32 KOs) hurt his opponent several times.

In the second round, a big right to the jaw buckled Malignaggi's legs and caused the American to cling on, while another hook in the fourth had the same effect.

Malignaggi (25-2, 5 KOs) did score effectively with sharp jabs in some of the early rounds, and appeared to be back in the contest after a productive fifth, but as the bout progressed, Hatton became increasingly dominant.

A series of booming left hooks chased Malignaggi across the ring in the seventh and in the subsequent three rounds, the American's knees appeared to buckle with almost every assault that Hatton launched.

At the end of the 10th, Malignaggi seemed exhausted and when Hatton doubled him over with a body shot in the 11th, McGirt signalled to the referee to stop the contest.

  3. malignaggi, looks more like Carlos Mauser in this photo. Sadly I never got to see the fight however I have done some reading on it and it would appear that Ricky is back to firing on all cylinders again. Good luck to you mate a true boxing gent.

Tired, are there any other sports that you are an authority on? I would love to see your comments on them!

  4. who cares if it was a good fight, or who says what about it? Ricky is British, Ricky won, and Ricky is The Champion. Well done.

  5. God, what is it with boxing fans? All I hear is Hatton/Calzaghe/Klitschko (whoever) isn't any good and a real fighter will beat them. Then when th fighter who is supposed to beat them doesn't there are excuses or 'well, he wasn't at his best, he's too old' etc, etc.

  7. Not Hattons best performance by any means. The commentators seemed to harp on a little to much about hattons performance for my liking.Even Hatton admitted himself he has a lot more work to do.he looked a little confused at times on fighting style with Mayweather seniors methods that they are trying to coach him with. However Hatton as always very strong, great heart, fitness and fighting intenity.More that could be said about Malinaggi who looked intimadated by Hattons power all night, relying to much on his jab and not throwing enough combinations.Hang up the gloves Malinaggi!

WHY ALL HATE THE YANK WORDS THEN? I'M NOT TALKING A BAD FIGHTER IN HATTON, JUST AN OVER RATED ONE. BRITS THINK IT IS THEIR GIVEN RIGHT TO CLAIM SUPERIORITY BECAUSE THEY ARE BRITISH. WITTER IS BRITISH BUT HAS FAILED TO GET THE FOLLOWING OF HATTON AS HE'S NOT GOT HATTONS AFFABLE WAY. HE WOULD HAVE DONE THE JOB IN MY OPINION, BUT HATTON DECLINED.

  13. Witter. Low guard and tap dancing feet witter? There is a reason they didnt meet you fool and if you were the actual boxing encyclopedia you think you are youd not be chattin such dribble. you have a pc obviously so get online do some home work and come back when you have learned a few things about the sport! If Hatton was scared of Little witter do really think he would of stepped into the ring with floyd or costa? I can tell you now He hasnt side stepped one fight ever its the same with joe cal and carl froch, pointless fights. Thaxton is 10 times the boxer witter is but with out the lucky breaks

  14. Well done Hatton, however Malignaggi was never ever gonna trouble Hatton. I'd like him to move up weight and take on Cotto or Pacquiao next, either of these two guys would prove just as tough as Mayweather.
De la Hoya or the fellow brit Witter who's been calling him out for years would be good to see also.

  16. Hey Tired,
How about you tell hatton face too face, face him in the ring, lard arse critics like you should keep your mouth firmly shut! and face the reality that you would never be able too achieve what Hatton has . He has fought the world at his weight and nobody can live with him , he stepped up and had his arse kicked! but at least he has the balls too get back in the ring and carry on , he don't need the money , this is pride!
and as an englishman , i am proud of him , so get off your fat arse get in the ring with him and see if you make it past the first punch!! Well done Ricky !! yet another gobby Yank has had his arse kicked!

SO THE BIG TOUGH BOXER IS GOBBING OFF............ HE BOTTLED IT WITH WITTER, WHO WOULD HAVE RETIRED HIM. JUST LIKE HAMED GOT A GOOD SLAPPING AND REALISED WHAT A REAL FIGHTER WAS, HATTON WOULD HAVE FOUND OUT ALSO. THE ONLY REASON HE'S DECIDED TO FIGHT ON AFTER MAYWEATHER SCALPED HIS ASRE, IS HE HAS THE WEIGHT DIFFERENCE AS A GET OUT CLAUSE. THE SAD THING IS, ALL YOU BUMS BELIEVE IT AND CAN'T SEE THE DIFFERENCE FROM A CLASS ACT BOXER AND A SCRAPPING MONKEY............ STOP PLAYING THE BIG TOUGH MAN, AS YOU ARE NOT.
