Briton Ricky Hatton retained his IBO light-welterweight title with an 11th round stoppage of American Paulie Malignaggi.
Referee Kenny Bayless halted the contest 28 seconds into the round when Malignaggi's trainer Buddy McGirt waved the towel in the corner. There were no knockdowns but Hatton (45-1, 32 KOs) hurt his opponent several times.
In the second round, a big right to the jaw buckled Malignaggi's legs and caused the American to cling on, while another hook in the fourth had the same effect.
Malignaggi (25-2, 5 KOs) did score effectively with sharp jabs in some of the early rounds, and appeared to be back in the contest after a productive fifth, but as the bout progressed, Hatton became increasingly dominant.
A series of booming left hooks chased Malignaggi across the ring in the seventh and in the subsequent three rounds, the American's knees appeared to buckle with almost every assault that Hatton launched.
At the end of the 10th, Malignaggi seemed exhausted and when Hatton doubled him over with a body shot in the 11th, McGirt signalled to the referee to stop the contest.

Tired,
not one person here is making out that Hatton is a legend, far from it. we are congratulating him on a good win and lettin him know he is an above average boxer. your takin the raw end because you see fit to knock him and bring him down. Are you a brocken old pro whos a bit bitter or some thing? He takes tough fights and many times fights for belts 2 3 4 times on the trot, didnt like the way his career was going so split from his promoter to get the better fights not for the money but for the credentials he works his @#$% off to not only give a good show but to shut people like you up.And whats all this about Holmes........? its 2008 fella and those boxers, as great as they were, are past greats and there isnt one boxer in the last ten years who has ever come close to being at the level of toughness that those guys were, either here or the usa.So get of your pedistool bud, there are a handfull of boxers on this planet at present who can pull the viewing rates in and like it or not Hatton is one of them my learned friend. You might not like him, you may even envey him a little, but he has the belts, the bruises and the scars NOW.Ali,Forman,Lenord,Marciano are legands past. Its like comparing prince charles to Richard the lion heart..... It cant be done!
reading the comments from tired are you a complete numpty ricky can only beat what is in front of him ok he came up short against floyd mayweather but he is a great fighter or is he another aalso ran lets see you put your chin on the line like me and other boxers around in the uk if you can go 10 rounds and still be standing then you can come out with stupid comments like that but if not i suggest you keep your stupid comments to your self
does anyone else think that maybe tired wasn't hugged enough as a child . why all the ricky bashing "he's just average blah blah blah" the guys a great fighter if the compitition is not up to his level thats not his fault.
half the comments are pish hatton has never dodged anyone
he has always fought whoever was there go on ricky
not so magic now is he the dumb yank ha ha ha ha ha ha
a mini nigel benn, regular scrapper, well done from lloydy
THIS IS NOT "LETS GET AT RICKY" THIS IS "STOP MAKING A LEGEND OUT OF AN ORDINARY FIGHTER".................. HOLMES FOUGHT ALI AND EVEN ASKED THE REF TO STEP IN, AS HE DIDN'T WANT TO HURT THE MAN. HE FOUGHT TYSON WHO AT THE TIME WAS IN TOP FORM. HE FOUGHT EVANDER AT HIS BEST, WHEN HE WAS AROUND 42 YEARS OF AGE. HE WAS ONE OFF BEATING RM's RECORD AND AS HOLMES PUT IT, "I WAS 35 AND BEATING YOUNGER GUYS, ROCKY WAS 25 AND BEATING OLDER GUYS"......... SO HATTON FOR ALL YOU NUMPTIES, IS THE MAN WHO IS LOOKING FOR OAP's TO LINE HIS LITTLE NEST EGG, AS HE KNOWS HE'S FINISHED. IF HATTON WAS THE HONEST MAN HE'D HAVE US BELIEVE, HE'D ADMIT THAT HE WAS AN ORDINARY FIGHTER IN A BELOW PAR TIME, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN WASTED IN A REAL BATTLE..........GET OVER IT, AND STOP TRASHING THE YANKS JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE BETTER FIGHTERS THAN US. MAGLIGNANNI WAS A NO HOPER, WHIST HATTON IS THE BEST WE HAVE AND YOU FEEL THE NEED TO CONGRATULATE HIM..............YOU SAD SAD SECOND RATE LOVERS.
whoever said that he can't compete with calzaghe, course he can't he's a different weight division u pleb end.

well done ricky lad! wish i was in vegas to buy you a pint!
"Hatta Boy" Ricky,
Well Done.
Proud of you.
well done ricky !
legend bring on maywether for a rematch
Hatton will get battered if he fought someone decent at 147lbs such as Margarito, forget fighting De La Hoya - too old and big, forget fighting Paquiao - too light. If you want to make a name for yourself in the boxing community move up and fight Margarito or Paul Williams. Johnson Sarlie
Well done Ricky keep up the good work
To "Tired"... I'm "Tired" of dumb comments like yours!! You can only beat what's put in front of you, which Hatton has done time and time again apart from Mayweather who is pound for pound the world's best, not to mention being a higher weight class which plainly didn't suit Hatton...as for "stephenthepict" how stupid can you get? SO WHAT if he likes a pint and a fry up between fights? All that means is that he has to work harder to get ready for a fight and that's his choice, he NEVER gets in a ring less than ready so what's your problem? Let someone smack you on the chin JUST ONCE, then you can talk abot "role models"...Moron. You two idiots should learn to celebrate our odd successes instead of criticising, it ain't like we get that many...Well done Ricky.
