South Africa humiliate England

Eurosport - Sun, 23 Nov 07:27:00 2008

World champions South Africa pounced on another error-strewn performance by England to consign the hosts to a record 42-6 defeat at Twickenham.

South Africa celebrate beating England at Twickenham - 0

First half tries from Danie Rossouw and Ruan Pienaar were added to after the interval by Adi Jacobs, Jaque Fourie and Bryan Habana as South Africa ran in five scores despite having a man sent to the sin-bin in either half.

"It was a brutal lesson," Johnson said. "We created a lot of opportunities but the execution was poor.

"It's a real character week for all of us now. We can either pack it all up or come back and try to win the game. We have to bounce back and play our hearts out."

England made a solid start to the match with Danny Cipriani giving the hosts a three point lead within a minute, but Pienaar quickly levelled for South Africa when England were penalised for not releasing the ball at the breakdown.

Cipriani had a second chance to put England in the lead but his effort from the halfway line fell just short.

It was a decent effort from the young England fly-half but South Africa took the escape as a signal to run riot as England produced another error-riddled performance.

Roussow forced his way over for the first try after an attacking lineout for the hosts when the England defence was exposed.

Pienaar added the extras before single-handedly exposing England's inexperience - Cipriani took far too long over a clearance kick allowing the Springbok to charge the ball down and take it on for an unchallenged solo try which he also converted.

England once again found themselves penalised at the breakdown, allowing Pienaar to add another penalty to South Africa's tally.

Cipriani recovered his composure enough to double England's output in the first half but it was scant consolation to the hosts who were being dominated in all aspects of the game.

Things were to go from bad to worse though for England as, not only did they fail to put any points on the board while Tendai Mtawarira was in the sin bin, but they were also forced to defend frantically for the last 10 minutes of the half to keep the score down at 20-6.

There were better signs from England at the start of the second half as Ugo Monye and Delon Armitage, both bright points for England, strung some moves together. But again the final ball was a problem and the hosts were unable to capitalise.

South Africa quickly recovered though and Adi Jacobs scored their third try of the afternoon after a brilliant decoy run from Jean De Villiers had opened up acres of space for JP Pietersen.

Pienaar again added the conversion before kicking a third penalty when Nick Easter was caught playing the ball off his feet.

South Africa saw Conrad Jantjes sent to the sin-bin for a late shoulder charge on Armitage, after the London Irish man had already chipped the ball away upfield.

But again England failed to take advantage of the opportunity and Johnson will want to forget the final 10 minutes as South Africa ran in another two tries.

Fourie got the first by out-muscling Paul Sackey for a loose ball before running through to touch down unchallenged. Replacement Francois Steyn added the conversion before the Boks finished with a flourish, working the ball across the field for Habana to cross over on the right wing.

  1. Flying Scotsman - Flying idiot more like. Scotland is a beautiful country but sadly largely filled with narrow minded, insular bigots. England were hammered by the Boks, the Springboks played brilliantly, took their chances and won. Move on. Scots as a Nation should maybe do the same - believe me, most English would be happy for you to be an independant country. You can have your Scottish politicians back, raise your own taxes from your own people and finance your own generous public services without further contributions from Westminster and the English.

  7. Come on guys. Enjoy the fact that the only thing the Scots ever get to enjoy is seeeing England beaten. It must be so sad that they have so little joy from the few and far between achievments that their insignificant small minded country achieve. So simply enjoy there gloating at seeing us beaten as it is clearly the only pleasure they get. I am proud to say I enjoy it when any of the home nations beat other teams unlike our Scottish friends who find the need to spend more time on Englands shortcommings than Scotlands occasional one of periodic achievements.

  11. Let be honested here I am kiwi. England were out played for the hole 80 mins by SA. Next wknd will be intresting because new zealand were out played for the first 20mins of the first half against wales. But then they pulled there heads in and came out in the secondhalf and showed wales how to play. It looks like it's going back to when the southen hem ruled. Come on the tri nations champs and rugby legue world cup holders.
England will see all black PS why do you not have a UK team that would be awsome.

  12. It was men against boys and yes in 3 years the boys will have grown up but SA aren't relying on all their old players either and how lovely to see a fully transformed SA front row giving England a torrid time after Smit and Bismarck were subbed!

If the ref hadn't been so card happy I wonder what the score could have been?

I am looking forward to the King Proteas or Amma Bokko Bokko (or whatever you want to call them in the run up to an election) giving England a lesson on a continual basis.

I remember in the days of Billy Beaumont's Lions Tour that England were never even a fixture on the calendar. Wales and the Lions yes but England in 1980 were Wednesday game material. So its just back to normal after a decade of abnormally good performances.

  13. I have always said making Jono coach was a mistake,England should've made Jake White coach, with Martin as his understudy, to place so much pressure on one of Englands greatest captains that has graced the field is unfair and to think he has the All Blacks next

  14. I find it fascinating that there is so much sledging going on. The Boks were fantastic. Fact. The England display was dismal. Fact. Martin Johnson is getting absolutely hammered for this display, however people are forgetting that there is a big picture involved. A four yearly tournament and if you take into account the Tour from hell in Aus and how they bounced back. A new team with only 3 players from last years world cup -and so this has to be a long term strategy. Put in the old guard and there wont be enough players coming through for 2011. Put loads of youngsters in now and build up to 2011 and possibly win it but just struggle in the short term. So dont be too eager for culls and the Managers head! I am a Bok supporter by the way!

  15. Main point being that this forum gets taken over by Scots carping over England's loss. Why are you Scots so insecure. My point over Maradonna merely illustrates this. My girlfriend is a Scot and proud. But thank God she's balanced enough not to glory over England's loss...to a vastly superior side who are deservedly world champions. I just hate Argies though and it sickens me how many Scots can be so shallow.

  17. Well Done South Africa, I think with Johnson and the media making all their predictions that South Africa would sruggle are now forgotten. I think before the english shhot off their mouths they should wait to play the game. Good luck for your next game against New Zealand, I'm sure Johnson won't be saying too much about them in the media. Back to the drawing board for England I think.

  18. True Rugby Fans will salute the team that plays with the most skill etc and deserve to win I,m english and salute the Boks. england and whomever plays the Boks will learn and that is how the game progresses, yeh agree all the hype is out of order and rest assured Johnson and his team knew that the hype was @#$%, keep the tradition of respect in the terraces and on the field or the game will end up like football( soccer
and don not believe all the pre match hype as an ex player you know before a game what you are up against and the hype is and should be taken as just that.

From james, on Sun 23 Nov 8:02AM
  19. All the week's hype that England woul re-bound from their self inflicted loss against Australia fizzled out against the world champions. What a professional display of rugby football of the highest order. 2 mistakes on kick-off by Conrad Jantjes were probably the only real mistakes made by a classy team that has won all 3 games on tour, the last by a really humiliating margin. England will really need to find some answers at player level. The guys on the pitch, particularly at 2nd five eights and center were just plain 2nd rate. Well done to the Boks. True World Champions proven at Twickenham yeaterday. The final lap of honor was a real treat.

  20. When you good you are English, when you the best you are a BOKKE

According to the pundite and the before the ball had even been kicked, England had already won
What a pathetic bunch, you are @#$% at everything, except binge drinking and junk food ready made meals scoffing
