Webber has op on broken leg

Eurosport - Sun, 23 Nov 06:30:00 2008

Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber has undergone surgery after he broke his right leg in a cycling crash during his own outdoor adventure event in Tasmania.

2008 European GP Red Bull Webber - 0

Webber, 32, who drives for the Red Bull team, was cycling near Port Arthur in southern Tasmania when he collided with a vehicle.

Webber was competing in his own charity event, the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge, a 250-kilometre (155-mile) challenge using mountain bikes, kayaks and trekking, when the accident happened.

"The surgery is complete, a pin inserted and the recovery begins," Event Director Geoff Donohue confirmed.

Despite reports of more serious injuries, including possible multiple bone fractures, Donohue said the broken leg is the Red Bull driver's only problem.

"He has a little bit of a graze on his left forearm, but he has had full scans and everything else is clear," he said of Webber. "He'll be in hospital for at least three days, for sure under a week."

Webber was airlifted from the scene near Port Arthur to the Royal Hobart Hospital, and later transferred to Hobart Private Hospital.

It is understood he will be out of action for at least six weeks, with Donohue confirming that Webber will surely miss Red Bull's scheduled test at Jerez next month.

"He might miss out on a little bit of testing but at this stage that's about all," he said.

  1. Hope the guy gets better soon. To me motor racing is just organised traffic. Along with boxing, darts and snooker it's got to be the most boring activity to watch. I wouldn't even call it 'sport', I mean it's just souped up cars running round a track.

  3. Pity about " lewis.great",really.His level of literacy suggests : (1) he belongs to a very low socio-economic group, or (2) he epitomises a complete failure of the UK education system, assuming he is a Brit, of course, in which case we should all be ashamed, or (3) he has serious inadequacy/self-esteem issues, or (4) all of the above Indeed, in the event of him developing another neurone and forming a synapse, he may well progress to a higher level of animal life and become potentially dangerous.
Credit to the creature, though, as I find myself moved to respond. More to the point, here's wishing a speedy recovery to Mark Webber

  4. Lewis.Great. You really are a dog nob. Why can't you go and support another sport instead, that goes with your mentality, like tiddlywinks. With a violent attitude like yours you'll end up hurting someone you didn't mean to.

  6. Mark Webber is a very good F1 driver, and I hope he gets better soon. However looking at some of the childish comments here, it does make people dispair.
The current F1 World Champion is 23 years old. He has been penalised throughout the season by other teams trying to stop him. Yet he rises above it all. If only other 23 year olds could act or take advantage of the example he is showing to the world. Then perhaps things like stabbings would stop.

  7. 1. All car drivers to have a certified full year on a bicycle or moped before they can apply for a license - then they'll know the difference between wet and dry, awareness and dimwit autopilot, pain and pleasure.
    2. All cyclists to carry proof of 3rd party insurance, all bikes to pay and display some form of road tax and a registration number. Discounts on the insurance and tax if they can produce proof that they've been to a road-awareness course.
    3. Far more dedicated cycle tracks, clearly and safely separated from the tintops.
    4. Contracts that keep GP and F1 drivers off the roads - they can afford chauffeurs or build their own cycle courses. My motorbike/car/just-about-everything-else-on-wheels-or-t racks insurance expressly forbids racing or competition of any kind, unless I fork out the extra for track days, etc, How about the same for the cyclists, marathon runners, joggers and fitness freaks who clutter up the highways and hospitals with their smug, self-righteous selfish dimwit behaviour.
    5. Get well soon, Mark, y'daft drongo, and stick to the things with safety cages - the real world's no place for speed-freak on a bike.

  10. To all you people slagging off cyclists ! Leave it out you dont realise how bad it is on a bike , especially with some of us trying to reduce our carbon footprint for the benefit of those who cant be bothered. Cycling is becoming much more accepted by road users and with drivers taking care as well as cyclists there should not be a problem. Most of the "trouble causers" are teenagers who blatantly use pathways as roads and dont give a S@%t about anybody else. Please get off cyclists backs and look at your own faults.

  17. What a complete and utter @#$% you are "lewis.great" using this forum to spurt out your stupid and childish @#$%. Yet another reason why most of the world hate the English due to there arrogance ,unfortunatly the 99.9% of decent people are tarred with the same brush due to idiots like you.Why not crawl back under the rock you came from ,you waste of good oxygen that you are .

Best wishes to Mark Webber and a speedy recovery,as you are one of the nicer less arrogant of F1 drivers, who is not full of his own importance or has his head up his own arse. Always manages to find time for the fans ...a lesson quite a few of the others could learn from.

  20. my word!!! I am really shocked and saddened that some people suggest they would happily hurt another human being and suffer no bad conscience over doing so, made even worse by the fact that they justify this behavour with the petty wrong doings of their potential victims. NO ONE is perfect.....We ALL do petty things that are that wrong....PLEASE PLEASE step outside of your little bubble that you live in and take a look at yourself...do some soulsearching....question your own behaviour.
