Massa advises Barrichello to retire

Felipe Massa has advised Rubens Barrichello to retire from Formula 1 if he needs to be searching for sponsors to secure a drive for next year.

2011 Williams Rubens Barrichello - 0

Williams driver Barrichello has no deal in place for the 2012 season ahead of the final race of the year in Brazil this weekend.

Barrichello has admitted he is not facing his home race as his final F1 grand prix, as he is still hopeful he will secure a drive for next year, which will be his 20th season in Formula 1.

Ferrari driver Massa, however, believes Barrichello has had what he labelled as an incredible career, and he reckons his compatriot should use this weekend's race to have a "proper" retirement from the sport.

"I did give him an advice: to quit," the Brazilian told TotalRace in an interview. "To me, Barrichello had an incredible career in F1: the driver who competed in most GPs and with many wins under his belt. It is a career most drivers would dream to have.

"He raced for the best teams in F1. I haven't advise him to quit because I feel he is old or something like that. But today in F1 there are 12 teams, and five or six are asking for money to give a seat. I think this is absurd.

"My opinion, which I told him, is that I can't see Barrichello searching for sponsors to race after all he had achieved in F1.

"I told him to quit and to use this last race to have a proper ending. But I know he will do what he thinks is the best for him and, as a friend, I will support him and hoping for the best for him."

  1. Before long Alponso will be telling Massa to retire from F1!! I wonder how Massa will take that? Lets wait and see until the first race where you will see Massa blocks Alponso until the finish!!

  2. Ha ha ha ha, this is very funny Massa telling Berichello to retire!! I think it is Massa who should worry about his own retirement from Ferrari in 2012. If he perform like the way he has done this year it could be Massa's last glory in F1!!! I think Massa should focus on his own position before worrying about his fellow countrymen. In 2012, there are only 4/5 drivers who will be fighting for the championship. They are Hamilton, Button, Vettel, Alponso and Rosberg. As for the rest of the pack, they will be chasing their tails!!

  3. Not to take it out of context, Massa advises Barrichello to quit to keep his pride, not because of some ill will. That said, unfortunately F1, despite all its cost cutting, is still a money game.

If it was purely on merit, people like Heidfeld, Barrichello, Hulkenberg, etc would be driving. Instead, we have Petrov, Senna, Maldonado, etc.

  4. Fat Boy has never been the same since he got beaten in 2008 and then recived a bang on the head with a spring from a car driven by a driver called ---- Barrichello. Time Fat Boy retired and took Herr Schunutter with him.

  5. massa is right about asking rubens to retire just think about it all the other drivers are doing a lot better finishes when is the last time he finished on the podium massa does a lot better than rubens. rubens has done 19 seasons that must tell you something i think it maybe time for rubens to take a backseat and let some one else have a go.

Anyone here questioning the general dislike towards massa must consider he is a prideless driver who`s rolled over to make room for alonso without even the slightest effort to resist. Regardless of the issues between hammi and massa,no one can respect a driver that does not respect himself.

Rubens has still fight left in him.

  9. Often things are quoted out of context, but for Massa to say Rubens should hang his boots up while he himself has lost all the magic he once had makes me thinks of pots and kettles and the colour black.

  10. Maybe Massa should retire since he sux and Reubens could take hie Ferrari seat back for one last year. How about that Phil?

So much negativity towards Massa! How strange! I thought the Brits loved him!!

If he ran down the street with a Union Jack, singing 'God Save the Queen' , all the Hamilton lovers would still hate him.

Fair enough he has been a disaster this year but its so pathetic on here how obvious the dislike for him is. And of course the reason for it.

  13. i think that f1 will be a sad place without rubens,i hope that he is driving next year and in a competitive car,
he is the kind of character f1 needs to stop it becoming so boring.

  14. Did anyone READ THE TEXT?! The headline, as always with Eurosport, is misleading....

What Massa said is that Rubens is too good and has achieved too much to end up being a driver who has to buy his seat. Sadly thats the way its gone with a lot of the smaller teams. Bring in money, bring in sponsorship, and we'll give you a drive. Massa just feels that if it comes to that, Rubens should walk away. Its actually a pretty respectful view.

  16. The Spanish veteran was announced as a HRT driver for the next two seasons in what will be his return to racing after a short stint at Sauber last year.
Perfect opportunity for a young talented driver to make a name...........................Not an older `DRIVER` one to wallow (Balance is restored)

  17. De la Rosa should have retired too at older than Barrichello but someone has given him the chance. Driving a Formula 1 car is a great challenge that few people get the chance too and those that do always say they miss it. Rubens is actually still good at driving at Formula 1 car and has every right to cling to every chance he has to do so.

Barricello should have retired after the Brawn success. Massa should not retire, just find a new level of competition. As ever Schumacher should not retire he has more to give the sport...He has more potential than Barricello. Sorry Rubens Bye bye....

  19. I think I'd rather have Rubens driving for my team than Mr Massa ,How many world titles have been won in the cars he's driven ?

  20. There are more than only Barricello to retire from F1, Schumacher and Massa can really pack their bags and join the old man.
