Feyenoord Move Up To Third

Thu 24 Jan, 11:09 PM

Feyenoord remain in the hunt for the Eredivisie title after coming back from a goal down to end FC Twente's 12-match unbeaten run.

Blaise Nkufo gave Twente a 21st-minute lead from the penalty spot but Feyenoord equalised before half-time through Luigi Bruins and went on to seal the win with strikes from Roy Makaay and Tim de Cler.

Defeat against Excelsior last time out and wins for leaders PSV and second-placed Ajax on Wednesday left the Rotterdammers seven points behind before this victory, but they reaffirmed their title-winning credentials with a superb second-half display to see off sixth-placed Twente.

They suffered an early scare, however, when the visitors were awarded a penalty after Luiz Andre Bahia fouled Romano Denneboom and Nkufo tucked away a low spot-kick.

Eljero Elia then almost doubled Twente's lead when he hit a post with a sweetly struck effort from the left, but Feyenoord were level six minutes before half-time when Bruins controlled a rebound on his chest and fired home.

Twente had dominated the first half but did not respond well to conceding an equaliser and looked a different side after the break.

Theo Lucius missed a glorious chance to give Feyenoord the lead when he shot weakly with only goalkeeper Sander Boschker to beat but a minute later Makaay hit the target from a tight angle from De Cler's pass.

De Cler ensured all three points went to the hosts in the 62nd minute when he slotted in from the left after Serginho Greene's header had rebounded off the crossbar.

The game's last chance fell to Twente substitute Marko Arnautovic whose shot was cleared off the line in the 81st minute by Greene.
