Jimmy Briand struck twice to give Rennes a 2-0 win over Ligue 1 rivals St Etienne in the last 32 of the Coupe de France.

The striker, who has three caps for France, dribbled past St Etienne keeper Jeremie Janot at the end of a swift counter attack to poke the ball into an empty net on the stroke of half-time.

Briand then doubled his tally by heading in a Jerome Leroy cross three minutes from time.

St Etienne, who knocked out Girondins Bordeaux in the previous round, rarely came close to breaking down the second best defence in Ligue 1.

Ligue 2 high-flyers Boulogne-sur-Mer reached the last 16 of the Coupe de France with a 3-1 home victory against top-flight Caen.

Boulogne, third in Ligue 2, prevailed courtesy of goals by Alexandre Cuvillier, Steven Mouyoko and Gregory Thil, with France striker Steve Savidan heading home for Caen.

Earlier, Danish striker Soren Larsen hit four as Toulouse ended Schirrhein's dream with a 8-0 demolition of the seventh-division team.

Amateurs Schirrhein, who knocked out Ligue 2 side Clermont in the previous round, were no match for the Ligue 1 side in front of a 6,000 crowd at Haguenau stadium.

The match was played 10 kilometres from Schirrhein as their modest stadium was too small to host a cup tie.

Top flight Lorient needed a Kevin Guameiro goal 18 minutes into extra time to see off Ligue 2 side Tours with a 2-1 win.

Ligue 1 leaders Lyon set up a mouthwatering last 32 match with Marseille as an Anthony Mounier double helped them to a 6-0 win at amateurs Concarneau.

The game, originally scheduled earlier this month, had been postponed due to a frozen pitch.
