Ajax end great week with a win

Sun 24 Feb, 05:00 PM

Ajax ended a good week on a high by coming from behind to record a vital 3-2 win at Champions League rivals NAC Breda on Sunday. The Amsterdammers on Friday announced Marco van Basten would be their new coach after Euro 2008, the Holland boss having signed a four-year deal at the ArenA.

They took the lead in the 21st minute through the prolific Klaas-Jan Huntelaar but headers from Matthew Amoah and Rob Penders after half-time turned the match in NAC's favour.

Ajax rallied and, after Urby Emanuelson equalised, grabbed a late winner through central defender Johnny Heitinga.

PSV continued their march towards the title crown by beating De Graafschap 4-1.

Lasse Schone gave De Graafschap a seventh-minute lead but Danko Lazovic equalised a minute later. Otman Bakkal and Timmy Simons' penalty, for which De Graafschap's Leon Hese was sent off, added to the score before Lazovic grabbed a second in added time.

NEC scored a last-minute equaliser to sink 10-man Heerenveen 3-2, having been two goals down.

Roy Beerens and Geert Arend Roorda put Heerenveen in the ascendancy but goalkeeper Brian Vandenbussche was dismissed in the 29th minute and NEC capitalised after half-time.

Goals from Jeremain Lens (63), Brett Holman (73) and Youssef El Akchaoui completed the turnaround.

Marcus Berg scored twice as FC Groningen resurrected their Champions League hopes by thrashing lowly VVV Venlo 5-2.

The striker's first goal was sandwiched between Goran Lovre's opener and Berry Powel's effort two minutes after half-time but VVV earned a reprieve when Ken Leemans and Jason Oost scored in the 50th and 60th minutes to make it 3-2.

However, Berg grabbed his second and Stefan Niljand added a fifth to put the result beyond doubt in the final 10 minutes.

PSV remain nine points ahead of second-placed Feyenoord, who drew 3-3 with Heracles in one of four draws in the Eredivisie on Saturday.

A late equaliser rescued Roda JC a point at Vitesse Arnhem, while the clashes between AZ Alkmaar and FC Twente and Excelsior and Willem II both finished goalless.
