Bayne: Caley must start stronger

Sun 24 Feb, 04:15 PM

Graham Bayne has urged Inverness to start games better as they prepare to face Celtic on Wednesday evening after a 2-0 defeat at Hibernian. The Highland club failed to improve their woeful SPL away form on Saturday as they conceded two goals inside the first five minutes at Easter Road.

Alarm bells are ringing in manager Craig Brewster's ears over his team's inability to keep the opposition out during the early stages of a match after Inverness also lost two early goals in last Wednesday's 3-1 defeat at Motherwell.

Bayne believes its problem they will have to rectify before they clash with Gordon Strachan's men at Parkhead.

He said: "We have to play from the start, not just when we go two goals down.

"It's a definite worry from the last two games anyway, it's identical.

"There is nothing you can put your finger on.

"It's maybe a case that we have been defending a bit deeper and trying to keep things tight for longer in games. It's something we will have to address.

"You are fighting an uphill battle when you lose two goals.

"It was almost carbon copy of what happened in midweek against Motherwell.

"It is disappointing and it gave us a massive task after that, albeit we did play well."

Bayne registered the first shot on goal after just 60 seconds but Hibs responded in ruthless fashion to take command.

Colin Nish opened the scoring in the third minute after he placed Merouane Zemmama's pass beyond Michael Fraser.

Steven Fletcher netted a second in the fifth minute with a neat finish following great build-up by the hosts.

Inverness manager Brewster admits his side need to make drastic improvements to their game ahead of Wednesday's encounter.

He said: "It gives you that mountain to climb.

"It's not an easy game on Wednesday night away to Celtic, we need to start well then."

Meanwhile, Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen was full of praise for Belgian goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay after he pulled off a series of good saves in a second half dominated by the visitors.

Paatelainen said: "I think his criticism is well behind him, it's a few weeks since he has had any. Hopefully that continues."
