Spurs manager Juande Ramos has described football as a "war" - insisting there is no room for emotion as he tries to guide Tottenham to Carling Cup glory.

The Spaniard, who arrived at White Hart Lane four months ago, wants to lift the Carling Cup this weekend to get Spurs to the next level of development.

He did it with Sevilla, winning two UEFA Cups and the Copa del Rey in his final two seasons before moving to Spurs to replace Martin Jol.

"I agree that Tottenham Hotspur are like Sevilla," he said.

"To have a trophy now would take a lot of pressure off the team so that they can then work more calmly with the aim of then fighting to be up there with the best teams - to be in the top four, to go for the Champions League, to win more trophies.

"Winning this trophy would mean that we are one step closer to doing that."

Along the way, Ramos has dropped England goalkeeper Paul Robinson before reinstating him on the eve of the Wembley showpiece against Chelsea.

He has selected players out of their normal position as well, paying little attention to reputations and putting emphasis on finding a winning formula.

"Football is like a war," he said. "You either live or die, so there is no sentiment.

"The most important thing is the performance of the team and I use the players that I have in order to improve it.

"I don't look at the names, I use them as players, and I use them in the way I think is best for the team as a whole, and for the team's performance as a whole."

There have also been radical changes in training and diet for the squad, with results turning for the better and players praising their new boss for his meticulous approach.

The likes of Jermaine Jenas and Robbie Keane have recently spoken of the belief Ramos has instilled on the eve of the cup final.

"Above all we have to convince players they're not inferior to Chelsea," Ramos said.

"It's a game of 90 minutes, 11 v 11. They've got a lot of possibilities to win the game. If they play scared or frightened they could end up losing the game so it's up to us to be able to convince the players they can win the game.

"When at Sevilla we played Barcelona or Real Madrid we were never inferior to them because they had that mentality and we ended up winning those games and trophies."

He added: "We don't know the response the players are going to give because it's a situation that we haven't been in before.

"I don't know if they're going to show maturity, I don't know if they're going to show their calm, I don't know if they are going to be able to demonstrate their ability to cope under the pressure of the occasion."
