Premier League - Redknapp: We deserved Hull win

Eurosport - Tue, 24 Feb 00:25:00 2009

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp felt his side were deserving of the 2-1 win at Hull which has given their Premier League survival hopes a massive boost.

FOOTBALL 2008-09 Premier League - Hull City's Michael Turner equalises against Tottenham Hotspur - 0

Jonathan Woodgate headed the winner five minutes from time after Aaron Lennon had earlier given Spurs the lead with a sublime strike before defender Michael Turner scrambled home an equaliser.

The result sees the White Hart Lane club climb to within one point of the Tigers, who are in freefall.

"I do (think we deserved to win)," Redknapp told Setanta. "They made it difficult in the first half, they worked their socks off but in the second I thought we got the ball down and passed it well.

"They stuck at it and we got the result, a terrific result. It's a massive result and puts us in a much better position and keeps Hull in a relegation battle."

Redknapp had rested a number of players for Spurs' UEFA Cup defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk last week, something he vowed to repeat for Thursday's second leg before Sunday's Carling Cup final.

He continued: "It gives us confidence that we've got a game Thursday night.

"It showed why I rested players. People should understand that is why I do my job and that is why they do their job.

"We've got to play Monday and Thursday and we've got a cup final on Sunday. It's ludicrous. We are trying to figure out a team for Thursday.

"It's a tough week - but it's a great start."

Opposite number Phil Brown was frustrated after the game and insisted Hull were unlucky to have lost.

He said: "I am disappointed, I don't think Tottenham were the better team. Probably what it cost for the team, finances, is about £100 million - I didn't see £100m of difference.

"I saw a committed Hull team in the first half; in the second half we didn't make it out of the traps.

"The turning point was the Kamil Zayette header that hit the post."

Brown refused to be too downhearted despite the apparent relegation fight, saying: "I am not worried, that's the wrong word. This has been a progressive season.

"We can't lose games like that. We've got to learn minute details we need to pick up on.

"If you assess the season it is a learning curve and we've got to learn from this situation. They know full well they didn't deserve to lose that game.

"I believe we have enough ability and character in the camp."

9 -proctor.stuart - I don't think money should come into this. I mean how many marathon runners can run a marathon per week, 1? Saying that playing football and running for 270 mins (3 games to those who can't count) is possible for a player without them being tired, just because they get paid silly amounts is ludicrous. REALLY.
Fair enough to be jealous about how much a footballer earns, but that's your problem not mine.
And like this mail I've sent, it's all down to one's own opinion.

  8. even though we are struggling in the league I think redknapp should stop moaning about the amount of games we are playing. Cup runs are just as important,so stop sacrifying these games. Us paying fans deserve better treatment. Sunday's day out is wots important to us joe public!! COYS

  10. I cannot allow myself to believe that the premier league would not be sympathetic to a case where a club has two such important matches already in a week , was it them ,?? or was it poor administration at the club put them in the position they are in ?/ really , its the combination of Monday and thursday , Two very very anti footie days , the thursday syndrome especially is a poor development in the game and one we can really do without !! Money talks !!

  11. i agree, even starting the best eleven on thursday, not a good chance of advancing anyhow.... i say play some of the young guys and go all out for the carling cup. easiest way back into europe. lets hope we can build a little momentum for league and push up to the top half at least

  12. Yes, ridiculously congested fixture list this week. Also, I've been wondering why we play at such odd times so often - Monday night?? This has happened several times this season, and I don't think we've ever played with the mainstream on a Saturday or Sunday, and this affects performances I feel - if your rivals all play on a Sat/Sun and you're 'relegated' to a Monday on your own, surely you lose the sense of occasion, of urgency and direct competition for vital points. This is partly why we haven't got the precious 3 pts on innumerable previous occasions - first time since Harry first arrived really apart from the initial burst, and as we see 3 pts carries you well up the table! As for Thursday and then Saturday, well decide which is important, use Thursday to bring on some youngsters, rest up and go for it on Saturday with the Woodgates & co would be my approach. I think we play better in one-off Cup games, so look forward to a great week! Well done Arry - keep it up and have a strong finish to the season.
