Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug is hopeful the Brackley-based outfit has made a step forward.
Haug recently admitted that Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg would struggle to get in the top-ten at the moment with the MGP W02 [see separate story – click here], but following the conclusion of the four-day test at the Circuit de Catalunya this week he was a lot more positive.
“The times we did at Barcelona look better than what we have seen in the previous tests [at Valencia and Jerez],” Haug told Germany's Auto und Motor Sport.
“Because we were able to drive more laps, we now understand the car and the tyres a lot better and that brings about better lap times.
“With our laps [at the Circuit de Catalunya], we went with very different settings than before. If everything goes in the right direction, the Silver Arrow may just surprise you.”
Mercedes concluded testing at Barcelona with the second best time - a 1m 23.168s, set by Rosberg.

I would not dare to write them off at all..! They've got most of what it takes to be winners - Ross Brawn's brain, Schumi's experience, Rosberg's hunger to become a champion, Mercedes' money... Ross and Michael turned Ferrari from a laughing stock into a Championship winning outfit (the likes of Prost or Mansell "only" won races there...); you can't stop the time but they could repeat the feat for the benefit of Nico???
Only when the budget is tighten, then there is a chance for the team to compete.
They should sort the suspension of their other cars first before getting into F1.
There is not much Mercedes involvement except the engine. Mercedes like many factory companies like Honda, Toyota, BMW, VW and Porsche have no interest in investing large resources in F1, the benefit from F1 is not worth it in terms of their road car business. Haug was impressed by how Brawn GP managed to run on a tight budget and win both championships and so he persuaded Mercedes to commit to a large stake in an F1 team albeit on a tight budget. Its no suprise that they couldnt afford to keep Jensen and build a simulator quickly. They also couldnt keep up with upgrades in 2010 and started their 2011 car early but again it seems to be coming out short.
I think they regret leaving Mclaren
The one thing the Mercedes F1 team has proved is that it's run by idiot's.
Oh, and the fact they are loaded with money.
surprise, surprise..... they might do a toyota?
I don't think Mercedes is serious about winning. They wouldn't keep Schumacher as a driver if winning was in their plans. Mercedes is there to put on a nostalgia race, where they bring in an over-the-hill ex-champion to bring attention to their name. They build what may be the best engine in F1, but they don't have the experience and expertise at this time to build a decent chassis. When Brawn took over and won their first season, he was using a car developed by Honda. Once that benefit started to wear off, Brawn couldn't keep up with development changes and Jensen was lucky to hold on to the championship. Rosberg is a good driver, but I'm afraid the team will allow Schumacher to have too much input into the cars development and Rosberg will be ignored. I think Brawn and Schumacher have to go in order for Mercedes to move forward.
I don't think Mercedes would have agreed to purchase the team if they weren't ready to invest in it, their brand name is too big to put it on an uncompetitive car. I think this year we are going to see a big improvement from last year in both car and the performance of Shumacher.
This team is basically a budget F1 team basically Brawn GP rebranded there is nothing much Mercedes or Silver Arrow in terms of resources except the engine supply. Ross Brawn and his other engineers would have to come up with some very clever ideas if they need to compete with Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull. They talked about this year's car as a turnaround but they are still not as impressive as they had predicted.
or not
