Bees comeback stuns Mariners

Mon 24 Mar, 07:45 PM

Grimsby's promotion hopes suffered a major blow after a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Brentford left them chasing the play-off pack again.Second-half goals from Alan Connell and Wayne Brown secured a League Two victory for the Bees at Blundell Park on Monday after Danny North had given the Mariners a first-half lead.

Town's 19th-minute opener came from a Nick Hegarty cross which was met at the near post by North, who steered a glancing header across goalkeeper Simon Brown.

Nathan Elder twice went close for Brentford while Brown saved from Peter Till.

But the visitors took control after the break and six minutes into the second half deservedly equalised when Connell thumped home a powerful header from Craig Pead's cross.

Grimsby were then the architects of their own downfall when Ciaran Toner gave away possession deep in his own half, and fellow substitute Brown seized the ball and fired past Phil Barnes.
