Dean Keates scored the only goal of the game to help Peterborough win 1-0 at home to 10-man Chester and take another step towards promotion. The diminutive midfielder - who last season helped Walsall claim the League Two title - rose to head home in the 71st minute from Scott Rendell's cross to ensure Posh's automatic promotion push remained on track at London Road on Monday.
Keates succeeded where Aaron Mclean and Rendell had earlier failed as a glut of golden opportunities went begging at London Road.
Rendell somehow failed to mark his full debut with a goal as he spurned a decent opportunity on the turn, steered a free header wide, nodded against the bar and had an effort ruled out for offside - all in the space of 10 minutes.
Struggling Chester might have pinched a point with a rare late attack, but Craig Morgan made a splendid last-ditch tackle to stop John Murphy before Shaun Kelly blazed wide from the resulting corner.
The visitors then had midfielder Tony Dinning dismissed two minutes from time for a second bookable offence after he clashed with Keates.
